Erik Balzer (born July 14, 1991 in Spremberg ) is a former German track cyclist .
Athletic career
In 2007, Erik Balzer became the German vice youth champion in the 500 meter time trial . In 2008 (with Philipp Thiele and Johann Kassner) and 2009 (with Eric Engler and Alexander Reinelt) he was the German junior champion in team sprint and 2009 European junior champion in team sprint and junior world champion (with Stefan Bötticher and Engler). In 2010 (with Engler and Maximilian Levy ) and 2011 (with Engler and Thiele) he was third at the German elite track championships , also in the team sprint.
In 2012, Balzer won the European Championship (U23) team sprint at the European Track Championships for Juniors and U23 in Anadia, Portugal , together with Eric Engler and Stefan Bötticher . The following year he was able to repeat this success together with Engler and Max Niederlag , and he was second in the sprint and third in the Keirin.
In 2016, Balzer had to take a long break from training and competition because of a cyst on the sciatic nerve until he was operated on in July of that year. He started at the fourth round of the Track Cycling World Cup in Los Angeles and finished second in the team sprint with Max Niederlag , Robert Förstemann and Eric Engler .
In autumn 2017, Erik Balzer ended his sporting career after losing his status as a B-team after differences with the Bund Deutscher Radfahrer . At the beginning of August 2017, he completed his training as a fire chief at the Cottbus fire department .
