Max Niederlag (born May 5, 1993 in Heidenau ) is a former German track cyclist .
Athletic career
Max Niederlag initially started for SSV Heidenau , and from 2011 for the Chemnitz Police Sports Club . From 2011 to 2012 he was a member of the professional track cycling team Team Erdgas. 2012
In 2011, Niederlag became two-time German junior champion in sprint and keirin , and in the 1000-meter time trial , he finished second. In the same year, Niederlag took two second places at the European Rail Championships for the youngsters in Anadia, Portugal , in the Keirin and in the team sprint (together with Benjamin König and Pascal Ackermann ). A few weeks later in Moscow, together with Ackermann and König, he became Junior World Champion in the team sprint. In qualifying for the sprint, where he finished third, he set a new junior world record there on August 19, 2011 over 200 meters with 9.89 seconds .
At the UCI Track World Championships in 2014 , Max Niederlag finished sixth in the sprint . In November 2014, “for disciplinary reasons”, defeat was removed from the list for the run of the Track Cycling World Cup in London . This meant that he could not qualify for the 2015 UCI Track World Championships , which could have prevented a possible qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .
At the UEC-Bahn-European Championships of Juniors / U23 2015 in Athens , Niederlag together with Maximilian Dörnbach and Richard Assmus was European Champion (U23) in the team sprint, in the sprint he won silver. At the European Elite Track Championships in the same year he also won silver in the sprint. Because of these achievements, he was taken back to the national team.
In 2016 Max Niederlag was nominated for starts in the sprint and team sprint at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . However, due to an illness, he could not start there. After he was disqualified in the sprint tournament at the 2017 UCI Rail World Championships in Hong Kong and again had to cancel the 2017 UEC Rail Championships in Berlin due to illness , he ended his athletic career in November 2017. After these setbacks, he lacks the "fire for competitive sport", said Niederlag, who works for the federal police .

Max Niederlag was awarded the Chemmy as the best young athlete 2013 by Chemnitz . On March 9, 2016, he was honored together with Kristina Vogel and Joachim Eilers with an entry in the City of Chemnitz's Golden Book .
