Roy Reinier van den Berg (born September 8, 1988 in Kampen ) is a Dutch track cyclist .
Athletic career
Roy van den Berg began his cycling career as a BMX rider. In 2009 he became Berg BMX European Champion in cruisers , in the race he finished third. Until 2014 he continued to compete in the world championships in this discipline.
In the following year, van den Berg competed in three disciplines at the World Track Championships in Ballerup near Copenhagen : in the Keirin he finished 21st, in the sprint 25th, and in the team sprint he finished eighth with Teun Mulder and Yondi Schmidt . At the UEC European Rail Championships 2010 in Pruszków , he was sixth in the team sprint, with Mulder and Hugo Haak . In the same year he was double Dutch champion in keirin and sprint. At the 2011 World Track Championships in Apeldoorn , Austria , the trio with van den Berg, Haak and Mulder took sixth place in the team sprint and fourth place at the 2011 UEC European Track Championships .
Then van den Berg took a four-year break from competition and made his comeback at the 2015 Dutch rail championships in Alkmaar . Behind the former world champion Theo Bos , he finished second in the sprint. At the UEC European Rail Championships in 2016 , he won the silver medal in the sprint. In 2018 he became European team sprint champion with Harrie Lavreysen , Jeffrey Hoogland and Nils van 't Hoenderdaal . In the same year he won three gold medals in the team sprint in races of the Track Cycling World Cup .
In 2019 Roy van den Berg became both world champion and European champion with Büchli, Hoogland and Büchli ; the Dutch team with van den Berg also won the team sprint at the European Games . The following year the Dutch were able to repeat their World Cup success .
Awards
In December 2018, Roy van den Berg was named the Dutch “ Team of the Year ” together with Nils van 't Hoenderdaal, Harrie Lavreysen, Jeffrey Hoogland and Matthijs Büchli . The Jaap Eden Trofee was presented to them by soccer player Rafael van der Vaart .
Private
Van der Berg is in a relationship with the cyclist Yvonne Hijgenaar ( as of 2018 ). A child was born in August 2013.
