Leijn Loevesijn (born January 2, 1949 in Amsterdam ) is a former Dutch track cyclist and national cycling champion.
Athletic career
Leijn Loevesijn came from a family with three children and grew up in Amsterdam's Spaarndammerbuurt . At the age of 14 he became a member of the ASC Olympia . Within a few years his brother, mother and father died. His father is said to have asked the Dutch cyclist Jan Derksen , who was Loevesijn's great role model, to take care of his son shortly before his death. Together with Derksen, Loevesijn won the national title in the tandem race in 1968 , and Derksen subsequently became the latter's manager and supervisor. Overall, Loevesijn won at least eleven Dutch championship titles in the following years.
In the same year Leijn Loevesijn won the silver medal in the tandem race (with Jan Jansen ) at the Olympic Games in Mexico City . He finished sixth in the 1000 meter time trial . In 1969 he became a professional driver. In addition to the goal of becoming world champion among the professionals , it was economic considerations that made the difference for him. As an amateur he worked as a dock worker in Amsterdam. In addition to the low earnings, he had too little time for bike training.
In 1971 Loevesijn crowned his career with the world title in the professional sprint, the first Dutch sprint world champion since 1957, when Derksen won the title. Only in 2004 could a Dutchman repeat this success with Theo Bos . In 1974 he won the Good Friday meeting in London , one of the oldest sprint tournaments in the world that was still being held at the time.
In 1976 Loevesijn resigned from active cycling. In 1971 he was voted cyclist of the year in the Netherlands.
Leijn Loevesijn worked for the municipal administration of Amsterdam until he retired. He remained loyal to cycling as a Derny rider and trainer.
