Athletic career

In 1966 Robert Van Lancker was third in the Belgian championship in the amateur sprint. The following year he became Belgian tandem champions together with Daniel Goens . The two were able to repeat this success a year later. The successful pairing Van Lancker / Goens became vice world champions in tandem at the UCI track world championships in Rome in 1968 , after having finished third at the world championships in Amsterdam the year before . In the same year, the couple won the bronze medal in tandem at the Olympic Games in Mexico City .

After the Olympic Games, Robert Van Lancker joined the pros and in 1969 was runner-up in the sprint world championship in front of a home crowd in Antwerp . After winning several national titles in sprint and tandem, he became world champion in sprint in Leicester in 1972 . He was able to repeat this success the following year at the World Championships in San Sebastian . Due to a lack of contract offers, he resigned from cycling in 1976. He became a soccer player at RFC Montegnée .

After the sport

After finishing his cycling career , Van Lancker, who had moved to the Brussels region , bought shares in a tire center. He then worked as a mechanic for the Benelux headquarters of a major car brand. When this company closed, he moved to the maintenance department of the sports complex in Molenbeek . In an interview from 2004 he complained that he had achieved his success in a "bad era" of track cycling in Europe. These were not noticed and recognized at the time, which is why he could not benefit financially from them.
