from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jozef "Jef" Van Bever , also Joseph Van Bever , (born June 2, 1889 in Brussels , † November 20, 1954 ) was a Belgian track cyclist .

Jozef Van Bever was a professional cyclist from 1909 to 1925. During these years he was Belgian sprint champion three times , the last time in 1920. He was runner-up four times. He also started in six-day races ; In 1915 he won in his hometown, together with Cyrille Van Hauwaert .

This six-day race took place on the open Karreveld cycle race track , because of the war there was no round-the-clock racing, but only from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. until it got dark. On the fourth day, his Brussels arch-rival Emile Aerts , who drove in a team with his brother François , jumped on the track and knocked Van Bever over. He suffered a broken collarbone and had to be hospitalized. Van Bever and Van Hauwaert were neutralized, Van Bever started again the next day and the duo won. The Aerts brothers did not run again. It is not known if they did this willingly.
