UCI track world championships 1972

The 62 UCI Track Cycling World Championships found from July 29 to August 2, 1972 at the Velodrome in the " Stade Vélodrome " of Marseille instead.

Because of the Olympic Games in Munich in the same year, only six competitions were held at this World Cup, the professional and women's races as well as that of the amateur stayers . The competitions for amateurs in the program of the Olympic Games were excluded.

The team of the Association of German Cyclists under Gustav Kilian was particularly pleased about the double victory of Horst Gnas and Jean Breuer in the amateurs' standing race; another German, Rainer Podlesch , also took fourth place. Dieter Kemper won the bronze medal in the professional standing category .

Participation among women was low: only ten women from five nations started the sprint ; However, the dominance of the starters from the Soviet Union that had prevailed in previous years seemed broken for the first time. The Dutchman Wilhelmina Brinkhoff took second place, the American Sheila Young third place. Even fourth place was awarded to a driver from another country, Iva Zajíčková from Czechoslovakia .
