UCI track world championships 1977

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 67th UCI Track World Championships took place from August 22nd to 26th, 1977 in San Cristóbal , Venezuela . This was the second time that World Railroad Championships were held in South America after 1968 ( Montevideo ) . According to cycling, this World Cup had a “touch of adventure and exoticism”.

The cycle track was open, 333.33 meters long and made of cement; the World Cup site is around 1000 meters above sea level. The fact that the runway was open led to massive problems, since Venezuela's rainy season in September, and there were therefore numerous postponements. So the four-wheeler had to compete in the final at 8 a.m.

There was great interest from the audience, with 15,000 visitors at the opening ceremony for the first World Championships on Venezuelan soil alone. Even if this celebration did not meet the taste of the reporter from Germany: "There was a lot too bombastic, too big in size for a cycling world championship [...]" , as if " Venezuela [...] was the center of the world" . Some viewers used the world championships for political protest, which however was stopped by soldiers.

The German pacemaker Dieter Durst experienced firsthand how rigidly the soldiers reacted there . Once, when he was unwilling to react to the constant controls at the stadium entrance, he was detained for one night.

The points race for amateurs was on the program for the first time at this World Cup. The implementation of the competition still ran into problems: there were countless - 30 - ratings, and in the end the jury disagreed about the placements.

Cycling certified the GDR team a "festival": they took all three podium places in the sprint , Lothar Thoms won the time trial and Norbert Dürpisch won the gold medal in the single pursuit . For the team of the Federation of German Cyclists , the worst defeat was that of the gold foursome in the team pursuit against the GDR after three World Cup and one Olympic gold medal in a row. As a consequence, national coach Gustav Kilian announced his resignation two months later.
