The 101st UCI Track Cycling World Championships were from 23 to 27 March 2011 at the Dutch Apeldoorn instead. The world championships were held in " Omnisport ", which opened in 2008 and has space for 6,500 spectators in the stands. The competitions took place on a 250 m long wooden track . The hall was sold out on two of the five days of the competition.
Australia was the most successful team with eight gold medals, while the French team came in second with two gold medals. The most successful athlete was the Australian Anna Meares, who won three gold medals in the sprint, keirin and team sprint. Grégory Baugé from France won two gold medals, in a sprint and a team sprint. He was sprint world champion for the third time in a row. The most successful German starter was Stefan Nimke from Schwerin with gold in the time trial and silver in the team sprint.
In January 2012 the World Cycling Federation Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announced that Baugé had been stripped of his two world championship titles from 2011 because he had repeatedly violated the reporting requirements of the World Doping Agency WADA . This was considered a doping offense.
