Leire Olaberria Dorronsoro (born February 17, 1977 in Ikaztegieta , Gipuzkoa ) is a former Spanish cyclist from the Basque Country who competed in road and track races.

Athletic career

Leire Olaberria was active in the elite since 2006 and was the most successful Spanish track cyclist during this time; The all-rounder has been the Spanish champion ten times in various endurance and short-term disciplines as well as on the road. Since 2005 she has placed in the top ten several times at European and Rail World Championships . In her specialty, the points race , she won the bronze medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing .

In 2010 Leire Olaberria trained in the center of Spanish track cycling in Mallorca under the German trainer Bill Huck . In November 2010 she became the European champion in the Omnium . In 2011 she won three Spanish championship titles on the track , in points , in single pursuit and in scratch . In 2013 she won the bronze medal in the points trial at the European Rail Championships and was national runner-up in the individual time trial. In 2014 she became the Spanish time trial champion and the following year she was double Spanish champion on the track, in single pursuit and points race.

In 2016, Olaberria failed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . In December 2016 she became a mother and subsequently lost her place in the national team and her scholarship. In April 2018, Leire Olaberria drove her last race in the final of the Six Day Series in the Palma Arena .

In August 2019, Olaberria organized the first Clásica San Sebastián for female racing drivers.

Dispute with the association

In September 2017, Olaberria was invited by the Spanish national coach Raúl Mena to contest the two-man team driving at the European Railway Championships , but not with her partner Eukene Larrarte , whereupon it did not start. There were arguments between the rider and the trainer, which in January 2018 resulted in a complaint from Olaberria to the Spanish Cycling Federation. She called for the dismissal of Mena, who is also the head of the Euskadi-Eustrak track cycling team , because the latter did not nominate her for the 2018 UCI Track World Championships for personal reasons .

A complaint from Olaberria about discrimination against female athletes because of pregnancy or motherhood is pending before the Consejo Superior de Deportes .
