Consuelo "Chely" Álvarez García (born September 11, 1965 in Fuentesnuevas , † December 2, 1991 in Bembibre ) was a Spanish cyclist .

In 1987 Consuelo Álvarez won the GP Ponferrada and in 1988 the GP Laredo . In 1988 and 1989 she was the Spanish road racing champion, and in 1989 she was also the national mountain bike champion.

Álvarez is said to have been put under pressure to succeed by her husband and brothers. Falls while racing and family problems made her deeply depressed and sought therapeutic treatment. Finally, the Spanish cycling federation informed her that she had been removed from the funding program for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona . On December 2, 1991, two months after receiving this news from the association, she committed suicide at the age of 26 by hanging herself in the basement of her home in Bembibre. Her family then raised serious allegations against the association, which, however, denied complicity in the athlete's death.

In Bembibre there is a street named after her, Calle Chely Álvarez . In addition, the Copa Diputación de León - Memorial Chely Álvarez junior race is held there every year , in 2014 for the 22nd time.
