Katie Archibald , MBE (born March 12, 1994 in Walton-on-Thames ) is a Scottish track cyclist , Olympic champion (2016) and three-time world champion (2014, 2017, 2018).

Athletic career

Katie Archibald was initially active as a swimmer before starting cycling in 2011. In 2012 she was Scottish junior champion in sprint and keirin as well as British junior champion in points and team pursuit . In 2013 she won the Irish International Track GP twice, in the points race and in the scratch , and in the single pursuit she finished second.

Also in 2013, Archibald won the team pursuit at the European Rail Championships in Apeldoorn , together with Elinor Barker , Laura Trott and Danielle King . In 2014 she became world champion in team pursuit together with Laura Trott, Elinor Barker and Danielle King and in the same year she won two titles as European champion in the single and team pursuit.

In December 2015, Kate Archibald had an accident with a motorcycle and was therefore unable to compete in the World Railroad Championships in March 2016 in London . The sports director of British Cycling , Shane Sutton , she publicly criticized for that ride a motorcycle and called this "crazy" and "a bad choice". Her teammates Jason Kenny and Laura Trott took Archibald under protection. If you train hard every day, you also need other things in life that you enjoy. The British coaches would treat the athletes like "children".

In 2016 Archibald was nominated to take part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where she won the team pursuit with Elinor Barker , Ciara Horne and Joanna Rowsell-Shand . The following year she became world champion in the Omnium and won three national titles, in the single pursuit , in scratch and in points . Also in 2017 she became European champion in the single pursuit for the fourth time in a row .

At the UCI Track World Championships 2018 in Apeldoorn , Katie Archibald and Emily Nelson became world champion in two-man team driving, and in the team pursuit she won silver. Later that year she won two medals at the Commonwealth Games , gold in the singles pursuit, silver in the points race. In addition, she won races in various disciplines at the Track Cycling World Cup 2018/19 . In 2018 and 2019 she was European champion in the team pursuit.

family

Her older brother, John (* 1990), is also an active cyclist. In 2016 he became Scottish champion in the individual time trial over 25 miles.
