Rebecca Romero MBE (born January 24, 1980 in Carshalton , now London ) is a former British cyclist , rowing athlete and two-time Olympic champion in various sports.

Athletic career

Romero, whose father is Spanish, grew up in Sussex . Her first sport was rowing. She was twice world champion of the U-23 with the double fours and won the silver medal in this boat class at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens . In 2005 she became world champion in the same boat class.

Due to chronic back problems, she ended her career in 2006 and began cycling, which she had been advised to do by doctor. Romero quickly established himself in the world class. Already in December 2006 she started in Moscow in the track cycling world cup in the 3000 m individual pursuit and came second behind her compatriot Wendy Houvenaghel . At the track cycling world championships in 2007 Romero was the first time world champion in the single pursuit; She defended this title at the Track Cycling World Championships in 2008 in Manchester , where she won the 3000 m team pursuit with her rivals Houvenaghel and Joanna Rowsell .

At the 2008 Summer Olympics Romero won the gold medal in the 3,000-meter single pursuit, making her the first British woman to win Olympic medals in two different summer disciplines. In October 2011 she left the British Olympic team due to a lack of success. Then she was active as a triathlete .
