Frances Houghton

Frances Julia Houghton (born September 19, 1980 in Oxford ) is a British rower . By 2016 she won four world championship titles and three Olympic silver medals.

Career

Houghton started rowing in 1993, and in 1998 she reached a third final at Junior World Championships and won her first medal when she won bronze in double sculls with Debbie Flood . At the 2000 Olympic Games , she finished ninth in the double scull with Sarah Winckless . In 2001 Houghton won her first World Cup regatta in Vienna with Debbie Flood, at the 2001 World Rowing Championships she finished seventh in the double scull with Flood and was also in the sixth British eighth place. In 2002 she reached fourth place at the World Championships together with Flood, and in 2003 she was fourth with the double quad . At the 2004 Olympic Games , the British double- scull won the silver medal behind the German boat with Alison Mowbray , Debbie Flood, Frances Houghton and Rebecca Romero .

In the following three years the British double foursome won the world title: 2005 with Rebecca Romero, Sarah Winckless, Frances Houghton and Katherine Grainger , 2006 with Debbie Flood, Sarah Winckless, Frances Houghton and Katherine Grainger and 2007 with Annie Vernon , Debbie Flood, Frances Houghton and Katherine Grainger. In the 2008 Olympic season the boat remained unchanged in terms of personnel, but only won the first World Cup race, in Lucerne the Chinese won ahead of the Americans and the British. The Chinese women won the Olympic regatta in Beijing in front of their home crowd. After a break from competition in 2009, Frances Houghton returned to the double foursome in 2010 , winning the world title in the line-up of Debbie Flood, Beth Rodford , Frances Houghton and Annie Vernon .

After sixth place with the double scull at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, a fourth place with the double scull at the 2013 World Championships and a fifth place in the same boat class at the 2014 European Championships . It was not until the European Championships in 2016 that Houghton was able to win an international medal again, with the eighth she won the title ahead of the Dutch women. The US eight continued his winning streak at the 2016 Olympic Games , followed by the British European champions who received the silver medal ahead of Romania.

Frances Houghton received her BA in Hispanic Studies from King's College London in 2003 .
