Alison Mowbray

Alison Mowbray (born February 1, 1971 in Derby ) is a British rower . In 2004 she won the Olympic silver medal in the double quad .

Career

Mowbray had already competed in the Nations Cup in 1993 , the forerunner of the U23 World Championships, and had taken eighth place in the single . Only after completing her studies did the 1.80 m tall rower from the Leander Club row internationally in the adult class from 1998. At the 1998 World Championships , she finished tenth with the double foursome. In 1999 she switched to the single and finished eleventh at the world championships . The following year she was tenth in the singles competition at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney .

In 2001 she switched back to the double foursome and finished fifth at the 2001 and 2002 World Championships . In 2003 in Milan , the British double scull reached fourth place, 0.31 seconds behind the third-placed Germans. In 2004 only Mowbray and Frances Houghton were left from the previous year's crew, while Sarah Winckless and Elise Laverick formed a double scull. The new British four-four with Mowbray, Debbie Flood , Houghton and Rebecca Romero won the World Cup regattas in Poznan and Lucerne. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, the Germans won two seconds ahead of the British.

Alison Mowbray studied at the University of Liverpool and subsequently completed her postgraduate studies at the University of Cambridge with a Ph.D. in molecular biology. She wrote the book Gold Medal Flapjack about her career . Silver Medal Life .
