biography
Athletic career
Leontin van Moorsel began her career in the late 1980s. Already in 1990 she became world champion in the 3000 m single pursuit in Maebashi, Japan . In 1991 and 1993 she became world champion in road racing . Through further international successes, u. a. at the Tour de France for women, she rose to be one of the best cyclists in the world. After a temporary resignation in the mid-1990s (more precisely at the end of 1993), her athletic development seemed to have come to an end, especially since she also suffered from anorexia and depression, which she later attributed to her hard training. Motivated by her husband, the cyclist Michael Zijlaard , she later decided to start cycling again in order to overcome her illness and even returned to competitive sport after a long break.
In 2000 she was again the dominant cyclist at the Olympic Games in Sydney . There she won the gold medal in the 3000 m pursuit race, the road race and the individual time trial . She also won a silver medal in the points race .
Between 2001 and 2003 she was world champion in the 3,000 m single pursuit three times in a row . In 2003 she tackled the hour record of her French competitor Jeannie Longo and improved her record by 916 meters to 46.065 kilometers.
The 2004 Olympic Games in Athens started out unpromising: In the street race on August 15, 2004, she crashed and was eliminated. Just three days later, however, she clearly prevailed over her competition in the individual time trial and in the end won her fourth gold medal with a lead of over 24 seconds. She finished third in the 3,000 m individual pursuit. In January 2005 she drove her last race in the six days of Rotterdam and ended her career as a cyclist.
Leontien van Moorsel has been voted Sportswoman of the Year six times in the Netherlands : 1990, 1993, 1999, 2000, 2003 and 2004. After the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, she retired from active cycling. In the same year, she was honored with a bronze monument by sculptor Paul Roijmans in her hometown .
doping
In September 2017, the physician Peter Janssen claimed in an interview with Volkskrant that he had provided Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel with EPO before the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney . The Dutch Olympic Sports Confederation ( NOC * NSF ) stated that a doping investigation commission in 2013 supported the doctor's statements. Zijlaard-van Moorsel denied these allegations.
