Joop Zijlaard (born October 29, 1943 in Reeuwijk ) is a former Dutch pacemaker in stayer and derny races .

Athletic career

Joop Zijlaard's greatest international success in standing races was third place at the 1983 World Standing Championship in Zurich together with his compatriot Martin Havik . As a pacemaker in derny races, he was much more successful. At the Derny European Championships , organized by the European cycling association UEC since 2000 , he won a total of six titles. Before that he was three times the title holder at the Derny European Championships for professionals, which were organized by the Association of European Winter Railway Organizers UIV .

Joop Zijlaard is best known as the derny pacemaker in six-day races. He was particularly popular with spectators because of his courageous driving style and clenched fist when chasing back, as well as his massive build and - in earlier times - huge mustache. For over 40 years he has led all known six-day drivers, including Gerrie Knetemann , Etienne De Wilde , Danny Stam and Bruno Risi .

Together with Matthé Pronk, Zijlaard set a new world hour record on November 18, 2004 in Alkmaar over 66.017 kilometers behind pacemaker. He also won 29 national titles. In addition, Joop Zijlaard was one of the organizers of the Rotterdam six-day race for many years. At the six-day race in his hometown Rotterdam in January 2013, he drove his last race as a pacemaker. On the occasion of his resignation, his autobiography Joop was published .

Personal and professional

In his main job, Zijlaard ran several gastronomic businesses in Rotterdam for decades, including the well-known fish restaurant "Kaat Mossel", which he handed over to the chef as the new owner on the occasion of his 65th birthday. He also owned the café "Gouden Snor" (Dutch "golden mustache"), named after his nickname among Dutch fans.

Joop Zijlaard also initiated the awarding of the “Gouden Mossel” (Dutch: Golden Shell) to deserving Rotterdam residents. In 2009, the mayor of Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb , presented the award to the coach of the Feyenoord Rotterdam football club , Mario Been . In 2010 the award went to the soccer player Giovanni van Bronckhorst and in 2011 to Mai Elmar , the head of the port of Rotterdam.

Zijlaard's son is the former cyclist and today's team manager Michael Zijlaard , his daughter-in-law the multiple world and Olympic champion Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel . Son Ron also works as a derny pacemaker. The grandson Maikel Zijlaard is active as a cyclist, and his sister Nicky won three national junior titles on the track in 2011.
