Mario Been (born December 11, 1963 in Rotterdam , South Holland ) is a Dutch football coach and former professional player.

Career as a player

On September 5, 1982, Been made his professional debut in the first division for Feyenoord Rotterdam in a 1-0 win over NEC Nijmegen . After 53 goals in 137 games for Feyenoord, he moved to the Italian Serie B for Pisa Calcio in July 1988 . In October 1990 Been went back to the honor division to Roda Kerkrade , which he left after the 1990/91 season and moved to SC Heerenveen . After a season in Heerenveen, Mario Been played in the Austrian Bundesliga for FC Wacker Innsbruck in the '92 / '93 season before finally ending his professional career at Excelsior Rotterdam in October 1995.

Career as a coach

Between 2000 and 2004 Mario Been was assistant coach at Feyenoord Rotterdam under Bert van Marwijk . In summer 2004 he became head coach of the then Dutch second division club Excelsior Rotterdam. In 2006, the club made it to the honor division with first place in the Eerste Divisie . From the 2006/07 season, Been was the head coach of the NEC Nijmegen and reached tenth place at the start, and a year later with eighth place in the table, the UEFA Cup participation. In the 2009/10 season he was a coach at Feyenoord Rotterdam. After Feyenoord had missed international business in the 2010/11 season in tenth place, the players mutinied against Been while preparing for the new season. In an internal vote, 13 out of 18 active spoke out against the coach, who then withdrew from his current contract. At the end of August he received a contract with the Belgian champion KRC Genk , where he succeeded Franky Vercauteren . On February 24, 2014, Been was sacked as the club's management saw qualification for the Europa League in jeopardy. He then worked for a television station as an analyst for the Eredivisie, before joining the Turkish first division club Fenerbahçe Istanbul as assistant coach for Dick Advocaat in August 2016 .
