The club played seven seasons in Serie A , most recently in 1991, was a finalist in the Italian championship in 1921 and won the Mitropa Cup in 1986 and 1988, which was already insignificant at the time . The home stadium Stadio Arena Garibaldi - Romeo Anconetani holds 14,869 spectators.

history

The club, founded in 1909 as Pisa Sporting Club ( Pisa SC ), played for the first time in 1921 for the Italian championship, but lost it in the final. In 1965 they rose to the B series for the first time . After only three years, they were promoted to Serie A , where the club only played one season. After the 1968/69 season , the team rose again from Serie B.

A short time later, the club found itself in Serie C and played there until 1979, when it was promoted back to Serie B. Just like ten years before, the club only needed three years to reach the series. The club stayed there for six years and achieved the best end of the season in the club's history with 11th place in the 1982/83 season. The club had to relegate again the following season after losing its last three games. But just one more year later, in 1985, they were promoted to Serie A again, but in this case only for two seasons before the club was relegated again. In 1986 and 1988 the club won the Mitropa Cup. The club succeeded in 1989/90 the renewed promotion to Serie A, but had to file for bankruptcy after a further descent in 1993/94 due to financial difficulties. After the association was wound up, however, it was re-established a short time later.

In the following years the first team played in Serie B and won the Italian Serie C cup competition in 2000 . In the 2006/07 season, Pisa occupied third place in the C1 series after the previous season and thus played in the promotion playoffs. There Pisa reached the final via SSC Venice (1: 1/3: 1), in which they met AC Monza . After the away game was lost by a penalty in the 75th minute, they won the second leg in Pisa 2-0 and played in Serie B in the 2007/08 season . The team finished 6th in the second-highest division , with which they could qualify for the play-offs for promotion to Serie A. Pisa was defeated by US Lecce in two games and thus missed promotion. In the following season , the club rose as the third from bottom of the league in the third-class Lega Pro Prima Divisione . Due to the insolvency of the club, it filed for bankruptcy and started a new start in Serie D in the 2009/10 season as AC Pisa 1909 . After only one season, they returned to professional football with promotion to the fourth-class Lega Pro Seconda Divisione .

In August 2010, the club was classified due to several compulsory relegations of various clubs in the Lega Pro Prima Divisione (third highest league in Italy), where he was able to hold in the following years. Before the 2015/16 season, AC Pisa announced the signing of a prominent coach with Gennaro Gattuso . In the playoffs for promotion to Serie B of the 2015/2016 season, the club was able to prevail and played in the 2016/17 season for the first time since 2008/09 in Serie B. After only 6 wins, however, the direct relegation followed.

There was a friendship with Werder Bremen .
