Alessandro Birindelli (born November 12, 1974 in Pisa ) is a former Italian football player and current coach .

Player career

In the club

Alessandro Birindelli began his professional career at FC Empoli , for which he played for five years, from 1992 to 1997. In the summer of 1997 he moved to Juventus Turin, who at the time urgently needed defenders after the departures of players like Sergio Porrini and Moreno Torricelli .

In his first season at Juve , he immediately celebrated winning the Italian championship . In the following years he was partly a regular player and partly only a reserve player, but he was with his Juve coaches ( Marcello Lippi , Carlo Ancelotti and Fabio Capello ) for his speed and his ability to always perform well, even if he had not played for a long time or substitution was always appreciated.

In the summer of 2005, as part of a friendly against Sporting Lisbon , Birindelli seriously injured his ankle and was out of action for almost the entire 2005/06 season.

The 2006/07 season he played with Juventus due to the manipulation scandal in Serie B and he again took a more important place within the team. Due to his age of 32 years and the departure of many stars in the defense, such as Lilian Thuram or Gianluca Zambrotta , Alessandro Birindelli was one of the leading players in the Juve squad and second team captain behind Alessandro Del Piero . He played 37 of the 46 league games and thus played a significant role in the immediate resurgence of the old lady .

In 2007/08, Alessandro Birindelli only played sporadically at Juventus. After his contract in Turin expired in the summer of 2008, he moved, now 33 years old, to his hometown for Serie B promoted Pisa Calcio .

In August 2009, the third division AS Pescina Valle del Giovenco announced the commitment of the defender. In 2010 he ended his active career.

In the national team

Alessandro Birindelli made his debut in the Italian national team on November 20, 2002 in a 1-1 draw against Turkey , his last of a total of six appearances for the Squadra Azzurra he had on August 18, 2004 in a 2-0 win in Iceland .
