Gianluca Zambrotta [dʒanˈluːka dzambˈrɔtta] (born February 19, 1977 in Como ) is a former Italian football player and current coach . He started his career as a right midfielder and was able to play on both left and right defense.

Career

In the club

Zambrotta began his career in 1994 at Como Calcio in Serie B . He was playing on the right side of midfield at the time and became a regular. When the team was relegated at the end of the 1996/97 season, he was signed by AS Bari . In Serie A he was a top performer at Bari.

In 1999 he moved to Juventus Turin for the equivalent of around 16 million euros . When left defender Gianluca Pessotto was injured in 2002, Marcello Lippi retrained Zambrotta as a full-back and became one of the world's best players in this position. With Juventus, Zambrotta won the championship four times and the Italian Supercup twice . He was also in the 2003 Champions League final with Juventus , which they lost on penalties against AC Milan .

After seven years in Turin, he moved to FC Barcelona in July 2006 because the club had to relegate to Serie B due to the 2005/06 Italian soccer scandal . In 2008 he signed a four-year contract with AC Milan, which paid a transfer fee of nine million euros to FC Barcelona. After his contract expired, he left AC Milan at the end of the 2011/12 season. After a year of no contract, FC Chiasso from Switzerland signed Zambrotta in July 2013. There he was active as a player and assistant coach to Ernestino Ramella until 2014 .
