Gianluca Pessotto (born August 11, 1970 in Latisana ( UD ), Italy ) is a former Italian football player . Today he works as a team manager at Juventus Turin .
Career
In the club
The left-back Gianluca Pessotto began his professional career in 1992 at FC Bologna and after two seasons at Hellas Verona and Torino Calcio he joined Juventus Turin in 1995 , where he was under contract until the end of his career in 2006. With Juve he was six times Italian champion and won the 1996 UEFA Champions League ; In 1997, 1998 and 2003 he was also in the final.
Gianluca Pessotto was never a player who put himself first, but within the team he was still a leader. Above all, he was characterized by his tactical discipline and perseverance - not the very best in football - more of a worker on the field and therefore an important team player.
In the national team
For the Italian national soccer team Pessotto played 22 international matches. He played at the 1998 World Cup in France and reached the quarter-finals with the Azzurri . At the European Football Championship in 2000 , he and his team reached the final, which, like the quarter-finals of the 1998 World Cup, was lost to France . He was scheduled for the 2002 World Cup , but a serious injury ultimately cost him participation in the World Cup.
Pessotto's fall from the Juventus office building
After finishing his active career, he took over the position of team manager at Juventus Turin on May 26, 2006. On June 27, 2006 , Pessotto fell from the second floor of the Juve commercial building from a height of 15 meters and hit a roof, which reduced his height. He was holding a rosary in his hand. He suffered several broken bones. After he woke up, he recovered quickly. On July 17, 2006, the doctors finally reported that his life was out of danger and that he could already speak again. Just a week later, he announced in a newspaper interview that he would be walking again soon and could not wait to leave the hospital. Initial fears that Gianluca Pessotto could face paraplegia did not come true. On September 5, 2006, he was finally able to leave the hospital and then completed an intensive rehab program in the Turin private clinic Fornaca di Sessant . In December 2006 he resumed his work at Juventus.
The Italian public reacted in shock, La Gazzetta dello Sport headlined: Pessotto, ma perché? (Pessotto, but why?). All of football Italy sent wishes for wellbeing and praised Pessotto as a great person and sportsman. The captain of the Italian national team , Fabio Cannavaro , a close friend of Pessotto, who received the news during a press conference at the 2006 World Cup , simply said: “Scusate, ma io vado via” (Excuse me, but I'm leaving) . Together with Alessandro Del Piero and Ciro Ferrara , he immediately flew to Turin to Pessotto's bedside. After beating Ukraine in the quarter-finals , Fabio Cannavaro and Gianluca Zambrotta held up an Italian flag that read “Pessottino siamo con te” (“Pessottino, we are with you!”). The Italian team dedicated their 2006 world championship title to him and never missed an opportunity to wish for improvement. After the World Cup, Fabio Cannavaro even brought him the World Cup trophy to the hospital. Many former team-mates, coaches and rivals also visited him and ensured that Gianluca Pessotto took on new courage.
