Eugenio Bersellini (born June 10, 1936 in Borgo Val di Taro , † September 17, 2017 in Prato ) was an Italian football player and coach . While his playing career was not very successful, Bersellini led Inter Milan to the championship and cup victory as coach , which he also succeeded in at Sampdoria Genoa . He also coached teams such as AC Cesena , Torino Calcio and AC Florence .

Player career

Eugenio Bersellini, born in Borgo Val di Taro , an Emilian city in the province of Parma , began playing football at the AC Fidenza club in a directly adjacent municipality. From 1954 and 1955, Bersellini was in the service of the club, which you can find then as now in Serie D , with the difference that Serie D still meant the fourth highest division when Bersellini was active, today it is the fifth highest.

In the summer of 1955 Eugenio Bersellini AC Fidenza left and joined the AC Brescia , where he his first season in the second-rate Series B played. In Brescia , the midfielder acted for five years from 1955 to 1960 and brought it to a total of 98 league games with nineteen goals. These figures show that Bersellini was by no means a regular. In terms of results, AC Brescia failed to move up to Serie A in these five seasons . Only once, in the 1956/57 season, was it possible to get closer to the promotion places by reaching third place. Since at that time only two teams were allowed to advance per season, only the two teams from Hellas Verona and US Alessandria, who were placed in front of Brescia, made it to the top class, whereby Alessandria was only able to prevail because of the better goal difference against Brescia.

In 1960 Bersellini changed clubs again and joined within the second Italian league Simmenthal Monza , where he played in a first period for two years. With fifth and eighth place, quite respectable results were achieved in both years, in 1960/61 the club, financially supported by the Simmenthal company, missed the first promotion to Serie A by only four points compared to SSC Palermo . For the 1962/63 season, Eugenio Bersellini went to league competitor Pro Patria Calcio to return to Monza after only one year with reaching ninth place in Serie B and seventeen league games with a goal . But in the meantime the club had turned from a contender for promotion to the first division to a contender for relegation to third division and had to compete in the 1965/66 season, the last of Eugenio Bersellini in the Monza jersey, even after being in Serie B. had only occupied the nineteenth and thus penultimate place and had two points behind the first non-relegated SC Pisa . One of the decisive factors for the negative development of the club was probably the departure of the sponsor Simmenthal at the beginning of the 1960s.

After descending to the AC Monza 1966 Eugenio Bersellini moved to Italy's south to US Lecce , at that time in the Series C found. In Lecce , Bersellini played in the third league for two years and achieved placements in midfield. He then ended his footballing career in 1968 at the age of 32 and was appointed coach of the US Lecce for the following season, succeeding Gianni Seghedoni.

Coaching career

Lecce, Como, Cesena and first term at Sampdoria

From 1968 Eugenio Bersellini was finally coach of the first team of the US Lecce . In his first season as a coach at the Stadio Via del Mare , he and his team reached fifth place in the Girona C of the Series C 1968/69. The result of the following season was the same, again they finished fifth. However, fourth place jumped out in Serie C 1970/71, Bersellini's last season as head coach of US Lecce. Then he left the club and was the new person in charge on the sidelines at the second division Como Calcio .

Bersellini trained in Como for two seasons. In his first season, the fourth place in Serie B was occupied after the end of all game days, they missed promotion to Serie A only due to a gap of two points on the SSC Palermo. The following season was less edifying for Como Calcio and Eugenio Bersellini. You landed in Serie B in 1972/73 only on a disappointing eleventh place. As a result of this rather bad season, Eugenio Bersellini and Como Calcio parted ways in the summer of 1973.

Bersellini was then the new head coach at AC Cesena . Cesena was promoted to the Italian elite league for the first time in its history under coach Luigi Radice , a little later master coach of AC Turin , Radice subsequently left the club for Florence . The successor to the successful coach was Eugenio Bersellini. Under his leadership, AC Cesena managed to secure relegation by reaching eleventh place in Serie A 1973/74 , while the other two promoted CFC Genoa and US Foggia as well as Hellas Verona had to go into the second division. Eugenio Bersellini's AC Cesena also caused a sensation in the national cup competition. They took first place in the first group stage in group five and left AC Turin and US Catanzaro behind, among others . Only in the second group stage that followed they were eliminated in third behind SSC Palermo and Juventus Turin and in front of Lazio Rome .

The 1974/75 season was as successful as 1973/74 for Eugenio Bersellini's team. At the end of all game days they were again in eleventh place in the table and had little to do with the relegation battle. After the second successful season with AC Cesena, Bersellini turned his back on the club in the summer of 1975 and was the new coach at Sampdoria Genoa , where he succeeded Giulio Corsini , under whom Samp had narrowly avoided relegation.

Eugenio Bersellini's first season at Sampdoria Genoa brought in the end the occupation of twelfth place in the table in Serie A 1975/76 with it, with the relegation could only be avoided by one point against Ascoli Calcio . In the following season, however, one could not prevent the Sampdoria, at that time not counting among the top clubs in Calcio , the transition to the second division, for the first time since 1967, had to start. In Serie A 1976/77 they finished only fourteenth place in the table, had two points behind the first non-relegated from Foggia , and finally had to accept relegation together with US Catanzaro and AC Cesena. Despite the poor performance, the management of Sampdoria Genoa held on to their coach throughout the season, and it was only after the relegation was confirmed that Eugenio Bersellini and his employer parted ways.

Success with Inter Milan

Somewhat surprisingly, Eugenio Bersellini was introduced in 1977 as the new coach of the top Italian club Inter Milan . He succeeded Giuseppe Chiappella , who had to leave Inter without a title after two years. In his first season as coach of Inter Milan, Bersellini reached only fifth place in the 1977/78 Serie A , at the end of the day they were eight points behind the champions of Juventus. However, things went better in the national cup competition, in the Coppa Italia 1977/78 . Here they finished first in group five in the first group stage in front of Ascoli Calcio , Atalanta Bergamo , US Cremonese and Como Calcio, and in the second group stage they were able to place in group one in front of Fiorentina , Torino Calcio and Monza Brianza, what resulted in participation in the finals. In the final in Rome , SSC Napoli were finally defeated 2-1.

By winning the Coppa Italia 1977/78 one was eligible to start the European Cup Winners' Cup of the following year. There, however, the end came in the quarterfinals against the Belgian representative KSK Beveren . In general, the 1978/79 season did not go well for Internazionale. In the Coppa Italia they were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Juventus Turin, the eventual winner, and in the Serie A 1978/79 division they couldn't really convince with fourth place. An increase in performance occurred in the following season. The 1979-80 Serie A ended the team's Eugenio Bersellini to engage in, among other players such as defender Giuseppe Baresi , midfielder Gabriele Oriali or attackers Alessandro Altobelli were on the first place in the standings with three points ahead of Juventus, grabbing himself the Italian Football championship - the first for the club in nine years. Through the championship of 1980 Inter Milan was also qualified for the European Cup of National Champions 1980/81 . After successes over Universitatea Craiova from Romania , FC Nantes from France and Red Star Belgrade from Yugoslavia , Bersellini's team finally ended in the semi-finals against Spanish representatives Real Madrid , who in turn lost the following final against FC Liverpool .

Starting the 1980/81 season as defending champion , winning the championship again failed relatively significantly. In fourth place, after thirty matchdays, I was eight points behind the new Italian champions from Juventus Turin. They were also not very successful in the national cup competition, already in the group phase when they were only third in group two behind the US Avellino and US Palermo and before AC Milan and Catania, which slipped into Serie B as a result of the Totonero scandal Calcio was. The situation was different in the next year, when the team of coach Bersellini in the Coppa Italia 1981/82 after successes in the group phase and one after the other against AS Roma and US Catanzaro played through to the final and there against Torino Calcio with 2-1 retained the upper hand after the first and second leg. While in league operations with fifth place, a season was again below expectations, Eugenio Bersellini managed to win another title in his last year as coach of Inter Milan, his third with the Lombard club. Nevertheless, Bersellini's contract was not renewed, his successor as coach of the Milanese was Rino Marchesi , previously worked for US Avellino and SSC Napoli.

Torino, again Sampdoria and Florence

In the summer of 1982 Eugenio Bersellini succeeded Massimo Giacomini as coach of Torino Calcio , which he had defeated the previous year in the cup final with Inter Milan. In the end, Bersellini finished his first season with Torino in eighth place in the table, which meant an improvement in one place compared to last year. In the Coppa Italia the end came this time in the round of the last four teams, where, after using the away goals rule, they were defeated by the up-and-coming Hellas Verona from Osvaldo Bagnoli , who in turn only had to admit defeat in the final after extra time Juventus Turin. Again the semifinals reached Torino under Bersellini in the Coppa Italia of the following season, but this time AS Roma proved to be too strong. In the league, the 1983/84 season ended better for Torino Calcio than the previous one, they finished fifth in the table after all match days and missed qualifying for the UEFA Cup by just two points over Inter Milan.

Despite very passable results as a Torino coach, Eugenio Bersellini had to leave the club in the summer of 1984. His successor was Luigi Radice , who led the club to the first and to date only championship in 1976 since the Superga plane crash in 1949 and who was only to miss this by four points in 1984/85 . Eugenio Bersellini, on the other hand, succeeded Renzo Ulivieri as the new coach of Sampdoria Genoa, which he had coached from 1975 to 1977 and led to the second division. Under Ulivieri, the ambitious Sampdoria had returned to Serie A and established themselves in the upper midfield. This development could also be continued under the new responsible on the sidelines, in the Serie A 1984/85 the fourth place in the table was occupied at the end. Furthermore, the team around players such as Graeme Souness , Pietro Vierchowod and Gianluca Vialli were very successful in the national cup. After successes in the knockout games against SC Pisa , Torino Calcio and AC Florence , they were in the final and were able to prevail 3-1 after a return match against AC Milan from coach Nils Liedholm . The cup win in 1984 was the first major highlight of the great era of Sampdoria Genoa, which would lead the club to a championship, three more cup wins and a triumph in the European Cup Winners' Cup by the mid-1990s . But all this no longer happened under the aegis of Eugenio Bersellini. He was trainer at Sampdoria Genoa for another year, finished eleventh in the league and retired early in the international cup. Only in the Coppa Italia were they more successful, reaching the final, but there AS Roma turned out to be the better team and won 3-2 on both sides.

As a result of this rather mixed season, Eugenio Bersellini was replaced at Sampdoria by the Yugoslav former Real Madrid coach Vujadin Boškov , under whose direction the Samp team really developed. Bersellini, on the other hand, went to Fiorentina for a year. In Florence there was no real success, they only finished tenth in Serie A 1986/87 , which did not meet the expectations of the Tuscan club in the beginning. After the end of the season, Bersellini was chased and replaced by the Swede Sven-Göran Eriksson , previously coach of AS Roma.

Descents with Avellino and Ascoli

At the beginning of the 1987/88 season, Eugenio Bersellini was without a job for the first time in years. But when the US Avellino separated from his head coach, the Brazilian Luís Vinício , after just six match days of Serie A in 1987/88 , Bersellini was introduced as his successor. US Avellino, previously first class for ten years, but also managed under new coach Eugenio Bersellini not the hoped-for turnaround and had a table next to last with only 23 points out of thirty games as well as a residue from a point on the first non relegated Pescara Calcio in the Descend series B. Eugenio Bersellini is thus the last coach to this day who supervised the club , which was now founded as AS Avellino in 1912, in the top Italian division, after which Avellino experienced a steady decline up to bankruptcy and the re-establishment, which, however, has now climbed back to Serie B. is.

After relegation with US Avellino, Bersellini's contract with the Campanians was not extended, he was again unemployed when a Serie A season began. However, it soon became apparent that Ascoli Calcio was not satisfied with the work of his coach Ilario Castagner , he was dismissed and Bersellini was hired. The former Inter coach led Ascoli Calcio to stay in Serie A in 1988/89 in twelfth place with two points ahead of the first relegated Torino Calcio. However, the following season was less edifying, when Ascoli found himself in the relegation battle and at the bottom of the table from the start. After a 1: 2 against Juventus Turin and an already existing series of poor performances, Eugenio Bersellini was relieved of his duties after the 21st match day of Serie A 1989/90 and by Aldo Agroppi , who only worsened Ascoli's table position and the club finally led to Serie B as bottom of the table.

Coach of lower class clubs and in Libya

After his discharge in Ascoli Piceno , Eugenio Bersellini began a veritable odyssey through the leagues of Calcio . He coached Como Calcio , FC Modena and FC Bologna for a year . While Como Calcio narrowly missed promotion to the second Italian division, Bersellini's involvement in Modena and Bologna ended early after he had put both clubs in relegation difficulties and had to take his hat off early in the season. His work at Pisa Calcio went similarly in 1994. There he took over from Walter Nicoletti at the end of Serie B in 1993/94, but could no longer prevent the descent and the accompanying bankruptcy of Pisa Calcio.

Then Eugenio Bersellini took a one-year break before signing with FBC Saronno , which was then third-rate at the time , and remained loyal to the club for two years. In the first year in Saronno, Bersellini managed to stay up in Serie C1 in Girona A with the outsider. The 1996/97 season, however, went much better when FBC Saronno under Eugenio Bersellini finished fourth in the Girona A of the series C1 occupied and was thus entitled to participate in the playoff games for promotion to Serie B. There they lost to FC Carpi in the semifinals .

After two years at FBC Saronno, Eugenio Bersellini left the club and Italy and became the national coach of Libya. He held this office for a year from 1998 to 1999. He then worked as a club coach in the North African country and won the championship in this role with Al-Ittihad Tripoli in the 2001/02 season.

Eugenio Bersellini only returned to his home country in 2006 and took over two amateur clubs there. But neither with USD Lavagnese nor with US Sestri Levante was he able to achieve great success. After leaving Sestri Levante in 2007, Eugenio Bersellini did not accept any other coaching posts.
