Enzo Robotti (born June 13, 1935 in Alessandria ) is a former Italian football player and later coach . As a player, he was particularly successful in the AC Florence jersey and took part in the 1962 World Cup in Chile with the national team of his home country . Robotti later coached AC Prato , Pisa Calcio and US Avellino, among others .

Player career

Club career

Enzo Robotti was born on June 13, 1935 in Alessandria, northern Italy, in Piedmont . After he had played football in the youth of the local club US Alessandria , he moved to Juventus Turin in his youth , where he finally spent the rest of his youth career until 1955. From 1955 to 1956 a loan to US Sanremese followed , where he gained his first experience in almost professional football in 31 Serie C league games , but returned to Juventus after a year. There he could not assert himself and came in the Serie A 1956/57 only on fifteen missions.

Then Enzo Robotti changed employers again and joined the reigning Italian runner-up, Fiorentina , where he was to spend eight years until 1965 and in that time completed 231 league games with two goals. With the Fiorentina , the defender managed the feat of becoming runner-up three times in his first three years with the club. It was closest in the 1958/59 season , when they finished second, three points behind AC Milan . However, Enzo Robotti could not win a championship with Fiorentina. Nevertheless, the Fiorentina team of the early 1960s was one of the club's most successful teams. After being a defeated finalist the year before, the team of coach Giuseppe Chiappella reached the final again in the Coppa Italia 1960/61 after successes over FC Messina , AS Roma and Juventus Turin , where they met Lazio Rome . With goals from Gianfranco Petris and Luigi Milan , Florence won the final 2-0 and secured the cup victory, along with qualifying for the 1961/62 European Cup Winners' Cup . In this tournament you were the defending champion, although the cup victory in 1959/60 went to AC Milan. However, since this also became champions, Fiorentina also qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1960/61 . In this competition - incidentally the first of its kind - you pushed through to the final after victories over FC Luzern and Dinamo Zagreb , where you defeated the Glasgow Rangers 4-1 on a two-legged basis and became the first ever European Cup winners. They also reached the final in the following year, but were defeated there by the Spanish representative Atlético Madrid 3-0 in the replay after the actual final had ended 1-1 after extra time.

After 1961, Robotti failed to win another title with Fiorentina. He left the club in 1965 for AC Brescia . There he completed 49 league games with one goal in Serie A in two years . As a climber, Brescia managed to stay in the Serie A in 1965/66 in ninth place. In the following year, the same project was only just barely possible with fourth place and one point ahead of the first relegated Lazio Rome. In the 1967/68 season Enzo Robotti finally played for AS Roma . With 21 games this season, he contributed to reaching eleventh place. In the summer of 1968, Enzo Robotti ended his career as a football player at the age of 33.

National team

Between 1958 and 1965 Enzo Robotti made a total of fifteen international matches for the Italian national football team . He was appointed to the Italian squad for the 1962 World Cup in Chile by national coach Paolo Mazza . At the tournament Robotti was used in all three games of the Italian team. The 1962 World Cup was disappointing for the Italian team overall. After a goalless draw against the Federal Republic of Germany at the beginning, they lost 2-0 to the Chilean hosts in the famous Battle of Santiago , which meant the end after the second game of the group stage. The 3-0 win in the last group game against Switzerland could n't change that.

Coaching career

After the end of his career as a football player, Enzo Robotti became a coach. His first position was from 1970 to 1971 at Polisportiva Aquila Montevarchi . This was followed by a two-year activity at AC Prato in Serie C. He then worked for the same length of time at league competitor Pisa Calcio , with which, however, the promotion to Serie B was not successful. Between 1975 and 1977 Robotti was responsible for the fortunes of US Grosseto . Here too, midfield positions in Serie C jumped out in both seasons. He then worked another two years at AS Montecatini in the Series D . As second of the Girone E succeeded in the 1977/78 season promotion to the C2 series , where in the following year as seventh of the Girone A, relegation was achieved.

From 1980 Enzo Robotti was active for two years with the third division club Spezia Calcio , but rose with the club in the first year in the C2 series. There they only came in ninth in the following year and clearly missed direct re-promotion, whereupon the paths of club and coach parted. In the 1982/83 season Robotti coached the third division team Fano Calcio , whom he led in seventh place in the Girone A of the C1 series . Then Robotti moved to league rivals Rondinella Marzocco from Florence , where he was seventh again in the first year. The following year they ranked tenth after the end of all game days.

In the 1985/86 season Enzo Robotti had his first and only station in Serie A. Together with the technical director Tomislav Ivić , the former defender coached the team of the US Avellino . In twelfth place, with four points ahead of Pisa Calcio, they were able to stay in the league. Nevertheless, the coaching team was then replaced by Luís Vinício . At the beginning of the third division season 1987/88 Robotti took over at second division relegated Cagliari Calcio , but was released early after a bad start. From 1988 to 1989 Robotti Frosinone Calcio trained in the C1 series, but rose with the club. Only two coaching stations followed, both from 1989 to 1990 at Rondinella Marzocco and from 1990 to 1991 at Trento Calcio , however, there were no successes.
