The European Cup Winners' Cup in 1960/61 was the first edition of the competition for European football cup winners. This was of an unofficial nature, as it was not yet organized by UEFA , but by a committee made up of officials from the participating clubs. The finals took place on May 17 and 27, 1961 between Fiorentina and Glasgow Rangers . Florence won the first edition with a 2-0 win in Glasgow and a 2-1 home win 4-1. The top scorer was Kurt Hamrin with six goals, who was under contract with the victorious Italians.

Only 10 club teams took part, including 6 reigning cup winners, 2 cup finalists and 2 runner-ups. The Czechoslovak representative Spartak ZJŠ Brno was only in the final of the national cup competition at this point, Italy sent the cup finalists with Fiorentina, as Juventus Turin, as the Italian double winner, had already qualified for the European Cup of National Champions in 1960/61 . In Hungary there was no national cup competition at that time, participant Ferencváros Budapest was runner-up. The Football Association of the GDR sent instead of the cup winners Dynamo Berlin the runner-up of the season 1959 ASK forward Berlin because it was considered more appropriate representative of the GDR.

From West Germany there were DFB Cup winners Borussia Mönchengladbach , from Austria the ÖFB Cup winners FK Austria Wien and from Switzerland Cup winners FC Luzern .

mode

The participants played the winner in a pure cup mode with home and away legs (including the final). If there was a tie after extra time in the second leg, there would have been a play-off on a neutral pitch, as a penalty shoot-out was not yet planned. The away goals rule did not apply either.
