Christian "Bobo" Vieri (born July 12, 1973 in Bologna ) is a former Italian football player . From 1997 to 2003 he was one of the best center strikers in the world with 113 goals in 140 league games (an average of 0.8 goals per game) . He benefited above all from his physical assertiveness, his positional play and his goal danger. However, he was often slowed down by his high susceptibility to injury .
Career
In the club
After Vieri had emigrated to Australia with his parents in the 1970s , he began playing football in the youth of the Marconi Stallions from Sydney . His father Roberto Vieri was already active there as a professional. After Christian Vieri attended Prairiewood High School in west Sydney, he returned to Italy in the late 1980s and signed a contract with Torino Calcio . After a season at AC Prato , he played again for Turin from 1990 to 1992, but did not appear in the two finals of the 1991/92 UEFA Cup against Ajax Amsterdam . In 1997 he won the Italian championship with Juventus Turin . In the same year he lost the final of the UEFA Champions League against Borussia Dortmund with the club .
Although Vieri just one season at Atletico Madrid played, he is one of the legends of the club . Before the 1997/98 season , he moved from Juve for the equivalent of 15 million euros . He scored a sensational 24 goals in 24 games this season. This record-breaking goal ratio of one goal a game he was during his year at Atletico Madrid top scorer of La Liga and could this success later in the Italian Serie A 2002/03 repeat with 24 goals in 23 games.
His greatest successes as a club player were winning the last European Cup Winners' Cup with Lazio in 1999 and winning the European Supercup in the same year . He then joined Inter Milan , which paid the record transfer fee of 45 million euros for him.
In July 2005 Christian Vieri moved to city rivals AC Milan on a free transfer . After only half a season he was loaned to AS Monaco and moved back home to Sampdoria Genoa for the 2006/07 season . However, he stayed there for only a month and finally moved to Serie A newcomer Atalanta Bergamo in August 2006 , where he had already played in 1995/96. In July 2007 Vieri signed a one-year contract with ACF Florence , where he was supposed to replace Luca Toni, who had emigrated , but even there he was unable to build on the strong performances of his heyday. In the 2007/08 season he scored six goals in 26 games and often only acted as a substitute.
In June 2008 Vieri signed a contract with Atalanta Bergamo. There, however, he was repeatedly whistled by his own fans, who resented Vieri that he had said goodbye to ACF Florence after his comeback at Atalanta two years ago.
In October 2009 Vieri announced his retirement before he signed a half-year contract with Boavista Sport Club in Brazil at the end of December 2010 .
In the national team
Vieri played 49 times for the Italian national football team from 1997 to 2005 , scoring 23 goals. He would also have been eligible to play for the Australian national team, in which his brother Massimiliano played.
Vieri came to a European Championship in 2004 and a World Cup in 1998 and 2002 . At the two world championships, he could not prevent Italy from being eliminated despite his goals (five or four in a total of nine games) . The 2006 World Cup was denied to him due to a serious knee injury.
