César Rodríguez Álvarez (born June 29, 1920 in León , Spain , † March 1, 1995 in Barcelona ), also known as César Rodríguez or just César , was a Spanish football player .
With his 232 goals in 351 games, he was FC Barcelona's record scorer until March 2012 . Then he was overtaken by the Argentine Lionel Messi . Only three players, Zarra , Hugo Sánchez and Alfredo Di Stéfano , are ahead of him in the list of record scorers in the Primera División .
Career

In his youth, César played for SEU de León. In 1939 he went to FC Barcelona , but was not used there due to his military service and was seconded to Granada . There he made his professional debut for Granada CF and helped the club to rise to the first division as champions of the Segunda División in 1941 . In the 1941/42 season he was the second most successful shooter in the league with 23 hits in 24 games, including César Rodríguez scored 6 goals in one game in a 7-3 against CD Castellón .
In 1942 he returned to FC Barcelona . During his time at Barça he won the Spanish championship five times . In 1954 he left Barcelona and let his career at FC Perpignan (1955–1957) and FC Elche (1957–1960) end. During the time he played for Elche, he helped the club move up from the Tercera División to the Primera División in just two years . His last season at Elche he was employed as a player-coach.
National team
In the Spanish national team he was used 12 times from 1945 to 1952 and took part in the 1950 World Cup without being used . Between 1943 and 1954 he also played 10 times for the Catalan football team .
Trainer
After his success at FC Elche , he took over Real Saragossa in 1960 , who were eleventh in the Spanish La Liga in the preseason. César led Zaragoza to third place in his first year. In the second and third years he was fourth and fifth with Saragossa. In 1963 he returned to FC Barcelona as a coach, but was unable to build on his successes as a player and left Barça after a year. He later coached RCD Mallorca , Betis Sevilla and again Real Saragossa.
