Oliver Bierhoff (born May 1, 1968 in Karlsruhe ) is a former German football player and has been a member of the German men's national team since July 2004 , initially as a manager and since January 1, 2018 as one of four DFB directors as part of a structural reform ( Director of national teams and academy ). Player career

society

Bierhoff's first youth club was the Essen SG 99/06 . Later he played together with Jens Lehmann , with whom he is still a friend to this day, at Schwarz-Weiß Essen in the youth department. In 1985 he moved to the successful A-youth team at Bayer Uerdingen (today KFC Uerdingen 05 ), where he played as a professional in the 1st Bundesliga from 1986. After years of mixed sport at Hamburger SV and Borussia Mönchengladbach , Bierhoff moved to Austria in 1990 for SV Austria Salzburg , where he scored 23 goals in the 1990/91 season.

After a season in Salzburg Bierhoff was from Inter Milan bought and directly in the Italian Serie B to Ascoli Calcio lent. After four years, he had scored 48 goals by then, he moved to Serie A at Udinese Calcio in 1995 . Here he was very successful, scoring 57 goals in 86 competitive games. In the 1997/98 season he was the top scorer in Serie A with 27 goals. In 1998 Bierhoff was voted Footballer of the Year in Germany because of these successes . In the same year he was signed by AC Milan , where he became Italian champion in 1999. Bierhoff stayed with Milan for three years and scored a total of 37 goals.

In 2001 he moved to AS Monaco and ended his career as an active footballer in 2003 with AC Chievo Verona . He scored a total of 104 goals in Serie A.

National team

In 1987 Bierhoff took part in the military world championship in Italy with the German armed forces team and took second place. From 1988 to 1990 he played ten games for the U-21 national team . Bierhoff made his debut in the national team at the age of 27 when he came on as a substitute for a game against Portugal on February 21, 1996 (2-1).

Four months after his debut, he made the jump into the squad for the 1996 European Football Championship in England under national coach Berti Vogts . In the final against the Czech Republic he was substituted on when the score was 0: 1 in the 69th minute. Almost four minutes later, he scored the equalizer with a header. In the subsequent overtime he scored the first men's golden goal in tournament history for Germany to win the title.

In qualifying for the 1998 World Cup , Bierhoff managed the fastest hat trick in DFB history against Northern Ireland when he was substituted on at 0-1 in the 69th minute and scored three goals within six minutes to make it 3-1. At the 1998 World Cup in France he scored a total of three goals, but was eliminated with the team in the quarter-finals against Croatia due to a 3-0 defeat from the tournament.

At the European Championships in 2000 in the Netherlands and Belgium , he initially led the national team as captain . During a public training session after the first group game (at the request of the then DFB President Egidius Braun on the pitch of his home club SV Breinig ), however, he tore a muscle fiber while warming up and was out for the rest of the tournament.

In 2002 he took part with the national team at the world championships in Japan and South Korea , where he became vice world champion. The final against Brazil on June 30, 2002, which was lost 2-0, was also his last game for the national team.

Bierhoff wore the jersey of the German national team in 70 international matches and scored 37 goals.

Functional in the German national team

After Bierhoff and Oliver Welke had commented on some UEFA Champions League games for the TV broadcaster Sat.1 , two years after his last international match, Jürgen Klinsmann took over as head coach of the German national team on July 29, 2004 Team manager of the national team . This position was created especially for Bierhoff and did not exist in this way before. Even under coach Joachim Löw , he kept the post of manager. Bierhoff has been a member of the Presidium of the German Football Association since October 26, 2007.

Bierhoff's appearance as team manager of the national team was not without controversy from the start. To this day, fans and the media attribute some arrogance and know-it-all to him. He was also accused of not having immediately terminated some private advertising contracts and thus also secondary activities in parallel to his contract with the DFB.

In 2007 a dispute between Bierhoff and Rudi Völler took place over the media. Völler fought against Bierhoff's statements, who criticized the work of the Bundesliga clubs and recommended that they be based on the training philosophy of the national team.

After losing the European Championship final against Spain in 2008 (0: 1), Michael Ballack went to Bierhoff on the field and abused him with apparently obscene words because Bierhoff had asked him to turn the corner with a thank you banner to the fans go. Observers rated this as an expression of criticism of Bierhoff's work, who was also referred to as an event manager among the players .

When Bierhoff and Joachim Löw's contracts with the DFB were to be extended in February 2010, talks with Theo Zwanziger were broken off after a failed negotiation and postponed until further notice. The reason was the demands of Löw and Bierhoff, which Zwanziger did not want to respond to. Bierhoff u. a. a right of veto for a possible replacement of the national coaching post demanded. On July 20, 2010, Bierhoff and Joachim Löw announced that they would be extending their contract to 2012. On March 15, 2011, the DFB announced that the coaching staff around Joachim Löw and Oliver Bierhoff had extended their contracts for a further two years until July 31, 2014.

In 2014 Bierhoff won the world championship title with the German national team.

Since March 2015, Bierhoff has been project manager for the planned DFB academy in addition to his commitment to the national team . In May 2018, the DFB announced the early extension of Bierhoff's contract until 2024.

In June 2015 Bierhoff established the name DIE MANNSCHAFT as the new marketing slogan for the German national team. Since then, the lettering has been emblazoned on the national team's bus and is printed on the collar of the national team's jerseys. THE TEAM should act as the new brand core , analogous to Seleção (nickname for the Brazilian national team ), Azzurri ( Italy ) or l 'équipe (= “The team” in French for the French national team ). The new slogan was felt by some to be artificial, although the German national team had been known abroad for a long time as “La Team”, “El Team” or “Team” and was only not marketed accordingly at home. Particularly after the national team left the 2018 World Cup early , the slogan received heavy criticism and was perceived as a symbol of “aloofness” and “alienation from the fans” by Bierhoff and the DFB Presidium. The DFB President Reinhard Grindel then said that he also noticed that the term The team was perceived as very artificial at the base and therefore even thought about abolishing the term.

The film The Team was released when the title won in 2014 .

Since January 1, 2018, Bierhoff has been one of four (until December 31, 2017: seven) DFB directors following a structural reform. He is responsible for national teams and football development (also referred to as director of national teams and academy ). Bierhoff's area of responsibility is the management and sporting direction of the national teams (women and men) - Oliver Bierhoff is the superior of the sporting director Joti Chatzlialexiou - as well as the DFB academy with the associated areas (coaches, training, scouting, etc.). The post of sports director , previously held by Hansi Flick and interim Horst Hrubesch , was abolished as part of the structural reform in October 2017.

At the World Cup 2018, the retired German national team already out in the first round and finished last in Group F . Afterwards Bierhoff and national coach Joachim Löw came under criticism, DFB President Grindel and the rest of the presidium, however, strengthened Bierhoff and Löw. In the course of dealing with the elimination at the World Cup, the longest press conference in DFB history took place at around 110 minutes, at which Bierhoff and Löw answered questions from journalists.

criticism

On March 25, 2011, in an interview with the Bild newspaper , Bierhoff was critical of a broadcast episode of the Tatort television series that dealt with the issue of homosexuality in football. In the program, sentences like “You know, half the national team is supposedly gay, including the coaching staff. It's a kind of national sport to spread it. "Bierhoff interpreted the statements in the film as" an attack on [...] the family of the national team. "He is accused of indirectly stating that football must be played before homosexuals Influences are protected.

The gay and lesbian soccer network Queer Football Fanclubs stated in an open letter that Bierhoff had given homophobia in soccer its face. Bierhoff's violent reaction and the use of the term family as an alleged antithesis to homosexuality was unmasking, the statement said.

In August 2010, Oliver Bierhoff drew attention to himself by co-signing the Energy Political Appeal , a lobbying initiative of the four large electricity companies against a German exit from nuclear energy . Bierhoff came under fire because he signed the full-page newspaper advertisement printed in various daily newspapers in the name of his role as manager of the national team. The DFB later distanced itself from this energy policy appeal. Bierhoff only expressed his opinion by stating his job title manager of the national soccer team , and not on behalf of the DFB.

In the discussion about the affair of İlkay Gündoğan and Mesut Özil about a meeting with the Turkish President Erdoğan in the run-up to the 2018 World Cup , which took place close to the elections in Turkey on June 26th, Bierhoff became “a fatal strategy” Accused of repression and sitting out. He failed to “move the two players to a clear statement in public or to draw conclusions”.

After the national team left the World Cup in the preliminary round, after which they finished last in Group F , Bierhoff said in a world interview: “We have never forced players in the German national team to do anything, but always tries to convince her for one thing. We didn't succeed at Mesut. And so you should have considered whether you would do without him in terms of sport. ”Thereupon Bierhoff was accused of making Mesut Özil the“ scapegoat ”for the elimination of the national team. Özil's performance during the World Cup was viewed critically by some observers and football fans . Bierhoff gave an interview the next day in the ZDF World Championship studio with Oliver Welke and Oliver Kahn , in which he announced that he felt he was misunderstood. He said that he meant that if the team had done without Özil, it would only be for sporting reasons and not because of the Erdoğan photo. Özil has been nominated and he and Jogi Löw are also there. The passage that had been misinterpreted had not caught his eye when reading the world interview. DFB President Reinhard Grindel later pointed out several times that Bierhoff felt misunderstood.

After leaving the 2018 World Cup, Bierhoff received a lot of criticism: He was accused of choosing the wrong accommodation for the DFB-Elf with Watutinki . The Campo Bahia , which one moved into in Brazil in 2014 during the title win, had a completely different charisma than the shady Watutinki, located by the forest. Sunny Sochi on the Black Sea would have been better as a World Cup accommodation, especially since the national team moved to Sochi during the Confed Cup 2017 (where they won the title) and Löw stayed in Sochi during the World Cup when the national team played against Sweden in Sochi , presented himself publicly in Sochi, leaned relaxed against a lamppost and strolled along the promenade . The national coach is said to have been very dissatisfied with the decision. Bierhoff justified his decision for Watutunki with strategic reasons, because if you had been first in the group, which was assumed before the World Cup, you would have had less travel stress. In addition, Sochi would not have had a training ground.

Bierhoff also announced a comprehensive analysis. It was criticized that Bierhoff and Löw were still firmly in the saddle, the further way had already been mapped out, even if the analysis should find that Löw and Bierhoff were part of the problem and should possibly make room for something new.

In addition, before, during and after the World Cup, there was repeated criticism of Bierhoff regarding the topic of fan proximity. It was criticized, for example, that during the training camp in Eppan ( South Tyrol ) the training ground was shielded with blue foils and that the national players who traveled with them in Russia hardly ever gave autographs. Bierhoff's newly developed marketing strategies such as the name DIE MANNSCHAFT for the DFB-Elf in analogy to the nickname l'équipe of the French national team , the hashtag #ZSMMN (pronounced: "Together") or the slogan before the 2018 World Cup became "Best Never Rest" criticized in this context. The #ZSMMN was not a marketing slogan at all, but was only intended to summarize the activities and social projects of the DFB during the 2018 World Cup. Bierhoff was perceived by some media, former football players and experts as "aloof", the DFB had lost contact with the fans. Bierhoff pursued "marketing at any price". In the course of this, Bierhoff admitted that he had made a mistake and announced that he would be closer to the fans in the future: Before the 2006 World Cup , they had developed a code of conduct that had not been fully adhered to recently. Being close to the fans is an "important aspect that [he] takes very seriously," said Bierhoff. One will try to "intensify closeness and a down-to-earth attitude". Bierhoff went on to explain: "We have to build closeness again". However, there were also voices that emphasized that Bierhoff had warned against too much complacency before the World Cup and that he was the only relevant person from the DFB who was publicly available since the World Cup ended. National coach Joachim Löw was not available to the public for about weeks after leaving the World Cup. The new closeness to the fans was clearly noticeable in the games after the World Cup. Bierhoff stated that it was a realization that the DFB had to create the encounter with the fans.

Private

Oliver Bierhoff grew up in Düren and Essen. His grandfather Eduard Bierhoff was senior district director in the Düren district and his father Rolf Bierhoff was a member of the board of RWE AG . As a goalkeeper at SG Düren 99 , he was a team colleague of Karl-Heinz Schnellinger in the 1950s . With the move from Bayer Uerdingen to HSV , the father's position on the board of directors was discussed for the first time. Because of the father's status and salary, Bierhoff was bullied by his fellow players at the time.

The topic of his diploma thesis was: The determination of the placement price of shares in the run-up to a new listing - a comparative economic analysis using the example of the IPO of football clubs .

In March 2007, Bierhoff founded Projekt B GmbH together with sports scientist and former sports goods manager Marc Kosicke , whose business purpose is the marketing of athletes, especially soccer coaches. In addition to Bierhoff himself, the company's customers include Holger Stanislawski , Jürgen Klopp , Michael Oenning and Bruno Labbadia .
