history

Title page of the first kicker from July 14, 1920

On July 14, 1920, the kicker, founded by Walther Bensemann in Konstanz , appeared for the first time . The editorial office changed in the following years via Stuttgart (from October 1921) and Ludwigshafen am Rhein (from March 1925) to Nuremberg , where the newspaper appeared weekly from October 1, 1926. In 1933, with the seizure of the kicker of the Nazis arisiert . Bensemann emigrated to Switzerland and died on November 12, 1934 in Montreux .

Bensemann's successor as “kicker” editor-in-chief was Hanns Jakob Müllenbach (1903–1944), who had already worked on the first edition in 1920. He soon denigrated Bensemann, however, and in an article had " asphalt literary figures " dragged on who "denigrated the German being so ... [and] in some cases, however, had now fled."

Due to the war, the paper was merged with the magazine Fußball from April 1943 and from then on appeared only every fortnight. After the issue of September 26, 1944 (issue 20/1944) the publication had to be stopped completely.

post war period

After the Second World War , Olympia-Verlag , founded in 1946, published a magazine under the title Sport . It appeared for the first time on November 6, 1946 and initially reported primarily on football events in the American zone of occupation, in particular on the football Oberliga Süd, which was launched in 1945, but soon expanded its coverage to all of Germany, with the focus on the events was in the football leagues. At the beginning of 1948 the title was changed to Sport Magazin .

Sport Magazin and kicker (1951 to 1968)

In 1951, the former editor founded Friedebert Becker the kicker published by Th. Martens & Co in Munich new. On the occasion of the international match against Turkey on November 21, 1951, the zero number of the new kicker appeared the next day, which appeared regularly once a week from December 10, 1951 and thus competed with the sports magazine . Until September 1968, both titles appeared in parallel, with Sport Magazin being published twice a week since August 1953. While the Sport Magazin reported in more detail on other sports, the kicker lived up to its subtitle Die Fußball-Illustrierte and provided information almost exclusively about football, and occasionally athletics. With issue 34/1964 the kicker got a completely new layout and changed its subtitle to Die Sportrevue . The thematic portfolio was expanded accordingly, with football clearly in the foreground. This edition also shows the four-color coat part that is characteristic of today for the first time. From July 1966 kicker was published by Axel Springer Verlag , although the layout and subtitle initially remained unchanged. From issue 38/1967, the layout changes fundamentally again and the subtitle is from now on Germany's largest sports newspaper .

kicker sports magazine

In 1968, the acquired Olympia-Verlag the kicker and united him with his sports magazine and published now on the kicker sports magazine , with content and layout strongly on recent sports magazine oriented. On October 7, 1968 the first edition of the merger magazine appeared with the editors -in- chief Karl-Heinz Heimann (from kicker) and Hans Fiederer (from Sport Magazin). Since then, the magazine has been published as a rule twice a week, regularly on Mondays and Thursdays, with only the Monday edition having a colored cover section on glossy paper. From 2003 the Thursday edition appeared with color photos and since 2009 it has also been designed in full color.

kicker-fuwo

At the beginning of 1993, Die neue Fußballwoche (fuwo) was taken over by kicker-sportmagazin and, after only seven issues under the title kicker / fuwo , which had only appeared in the new federal states, it was discontinued in February 1993.

Structure of today's kicker

Today the magazine appears twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, and since 2009 also in full color. The day of publication can be postponed on public holidays, and individual issues are often omitted at Christmas and the turn of the year. The two editions of the kicker are structured differently. In 2018, the logo was standardized as part of a relaunch of the print edition and the digital presence. The most noticeable change was that the addition “sports magazine” was dropped.

kicker on monday

The Monday kicker costs € 3.00 and usually contains between 80 and 96 pages. It is visually divided into two parts. There is a jacket part, which is stapled and made of thin magazine paper, and an unbound inner part, which is made of conventional newsprint . The outer part contains a table of contents and larger reports and reports, while the inner part is more about news. The outer part has the usual amount of advertising for magazines, while the inner part is largely ad-free.

The content depends heavily on current football events. The following is reported regularly:

kicker on Thursday

The Thursday kicker costs € 2.20 and usually contains 48 pages. In contrast to the Monday football table, it consists entirely of newspaper and hardly contains any advertising. Compared to the Monday kicker, the Thursday kicker almost only reports on current events; Series or reports are the exception. There is no table of contents. From a thematic point of view, the two issues are identical with a few minor exceptions.

kicker digital

On August 14, 2012, Olympia-Verlag announced that it would publish kicker in a digital edition on Sunday and Wednesday evenings. The kicker on Sunday evening costs € 2.29, while the kicker on Wednesday evening costs € 1.99.

The background to this was the announcement by Axel Springer Verlag that it would also deliver Sport Bild in a digital edition on Sunday evening. The first issues appeared at the start of the 2012/13 Bundesliga season .

football magazine

From October 1976 the kicker brought out the football magazin , a 100-page magazine with numerous interviews, background reports and portrait stories about clubs and individual players, often including their private lives ( home visits ). In addition to many game scene photos, private photos with images of houses, cars and wives of the players can also be seen regularly. Overall, the booklets are very richly illustrated and have a high proportion of color photos. A permanent feature was the multi-page postcard interview Ask your star , in which readers could send in interview questions by postcard, which the respective "star" answered in the next issue. Initially, the magazine appeared every two to three months, from March 1978 onwards at a fixed two-month cycle. Up to the end of 1978 the issues were numbered consecutively (issues 1 to 13), from 1979 onwards according to the respective year. Issue 3/1984 [May / June] functioned as a special issue for the 1984 European Championship and thus represented the first EM special issue from Olympia-Verlag (from 1988 the EM special issue appeared under the title kicker). From January 1986 the football magazine appeared monthly in order to give the kicker editorial staff the opportunity to “take up even more interesting topics and devote themselves more intensively”. The monthly publication was discontinued with the April 1991 issue and the concept of the series was fundamentally changed. From now on, balance sheets for the Bundesliga season were published only twice a year, one for the winter break (from issue 1/1992, last time 1/1997) and one at the end of the season (from issue 5/1991, last time 2/1997). The last edition of the football magazine appeared in the summer of 1997 as a double title with kicker under the name Finale in the summer of 1997 and is therefore also the first edition of this kicker series, which has been published to this day (since 2013 under the name of Bilanz ). In the summer of 1991 there was also a one-time preview of the European Cup (issue 6/1991). Including the double title with kicker (fm 2/1997, final 1996/97 ), a total of 133 issues of the football magazine were published.

Special issues

In addition to the regular issues of kicker, which appear twice a week, Olympia-Verlag publishes a large number of special issues that appear under the kicker brand .

Soccer

Special issues appear in the field of football:

The booklets prior to commencement of tournaments in addition to team and player listings all around the football, the special issue , the large balance sheet mainly contains analyzes and statistics on the previous season and has the style of a season Chronicle.

Bundesliga specials

The Bundesliga specials (season preview) have long been considered by football fans (because of the color scheme of the cover) "Red Bible" and an indispensable reference work for the season. With the advent of the Internet, this importance has diminished somewhat. In the summer of 1969, the first issue of the now famous and sought-after series of Bundesliga specials was published with the special issue A. Special issues of the kicker had already appeared in 1963 and 1968, but still differed significantly in design and content from those from 1969, so these issues did not contain any color photos or any information about the regional leagues or other competitions. The direct forerunners of the kicker-sportmagazin special issue series, on the other hand, can be seen as the three Bundesliga preview issues of Sport-Magazin , which appeared in 1966 and which still do without the color team photos, but apart from that, they come very close to the later series in terms of both content and layout . The special feature of the Bundesliga specials, in addition to the extensive statistics and reports on the Bundesliga teams, is the full-page color photos of the teams. At first only the teams of the 1st Bundesliga were represented in the magazine. Since 1979 - in the first two years initially half-page - photos of the second division clubs have been added. Since this issue, the characteristic red, which was retained up to the 2017/18 issue, has been characteristic of the cover design of the special issues. After a general facelift of the magazine series, the 2018/19 edition appeared in a darker shade of red and with a new layout.

Since 1981, every Bundesliga special has contained a cardboard plug-in table (initially "kicker supertable") with which the respective table status with small cardboard logos of the clubs can be inserted in a stepped table staircase during the season. The first plug-in table in 1981/82 only included the 1st Bundesliga. Since 1982/83 the 2. Bundesliga and from 2000/01 also the third-class regional league (with slightly smaller club logos) were shown. Since the introduction of the 3rd league, this has been shown on the plug-in table instead of the regional league. The logos of the third division clubs are still slightly smaller than those of the clubs in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga.

In addition to football, special editions are published regularly on other sports:

In addition, tips for youth footballers, e.g. B. Training instructions, described or presented to junior teams, also from successful smaller towns. At the end of every Jugendkicker there was a comic , which was a permanent feature in the Monday edition from 1987 and was discontinued in the mid-1990s.

At times, the youth football team presented the Talent of the Month award to youth soccer players.

kicker online

The online offer has existed since 1997. At the beginning of the year it was initially embedded in AOL , and then from June onwards via its own domain . On behalf of Olympia Verlag from Nuremberg, kicker online was transferred to large databases by digital nervous systems GmbH, which is also based there , in which more than ten gigabytes of player names and data, analyzes, tables and reports are now available. kicker online employs around 30 - partly permanent, partly freelance - employees. An online editorial team that is independent of the kicker editorial team uses a live ticker to report on all major sporting events and around 80 international leagues. According to the publisher Rainer Holzschuh, kicker online counts around 2.2 billion page views per month, making it by far the most frequently visited online sports portal in Germany.

The score is calculated from the scores given by kicker editors to the Bundesliga players as well as goals and personal penalties. On the Internet, a distinction is made between a classic and an interactive version; in the latter case, the members can put together a different team from their squad every match day.

Since the 2006/07 season there has been both versions of the manager game for the 2nd Bundesliga and since 2007/08 there has also been a pro version in which up to 18 players can join together to form a manager league . Each Bundesliga player can only be acquired by one league member in this version and the squad can be changed weekly through purchases and sales.
