The kicker of the year award has been presented annually since 1974 by the German specialist magazine kicker-Sportmagazin . Football players and coaches from the Bundesliga are awarded the trophy Das Goldene k in various categories . The results are based on a survey among the readers of the magazine and the associated website kicker.de. In addition to the performance, the player's sympathy, fairness and demeanor are also important.

history

At the first edition of the election for kicker of the year , the performance of 1974 was up for discussion. The introduction of this readers' choice should be a supplement to the ranking list of German football , which is selected exclusively by the editorial team of the magazine, and to the choice of the footballer of the year , which is also determined by journalists, and thus also take the opinions of readers and fans into account. In the first edition, the best and most popular players in the categories of goalkeepers, full-backs, libero (cleaners), pre-stoppers, midfielders, center strikers and right and left wingers were selected. The first part of the election results was published in kicker edition 2/1975 of January 6, 1975. The results of the other categories followed in the following weeks. More than 6,200 readers answered the call "Vote the kicker 74!" and participated in the first choice by mail.

In the second edition in 1975, the categories were adjusted and significantly simplified. The search was for the best players in the positions of goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and strikers. More than 10,000 letters were received and the number of votes was 40,481. In 1976 the categories were adjusted again, they were supplemented by the Libero and for the first time also by the choice of the most popular coach. The number of participants rose steadily in the following years, so in 1988 more than 25,000 voters took part. This year, for the first time, the additional category Idol of the Year was introduced, in which, in addition to the Bundesliga players, German players working abroad could also be chosen. The category was finally abolished in 1998.

In the first decades, the survey was always given at the end of the year for the entire calendar year. Since 1993, the election has always taken place after the end of a Bundesliga season in summer each year. Due to this change, there was no vote for 1992.

The last time the election for the best libero took place in 2001, at the same time the additional outside track category was introduced and the midfield category was divided into defensive and offensive. From 2002 onwards, the categories were based on those of the ranking list of German football and included goalkeepers, center-backs, flank defensive and offensive, midfield defensive and offensive, strikers and coaches. In 2011 there was a further simplification of the categories, since then the golden k has been awarded in the categories goalkeeper, defense, midfield, striker, newcomer and coach. 40 years after the first election, more than 100,000 votes were cast in 2014.
