Youth career in Brazil

In 1998 Dante played in Alagoinhas with Catuense Futebol SA , before moving to Galícia EC in 1999 and Capivariano FC in Capivari in 2000 . In 2001 he was in the youth team and from 2002 to 2003 for the professional team of EC Juventude .

Change to Europe

In January 2004 he moved to France for the first division club OSC Lille , where he made twelve league appearances. In January 2006 he moved to Belgium to the first division club Sporting Charleroi , a year later to league competitor Standard Liège , with whom he became Belgian champion in 2008 .

Borussia Monchengladbach

During the winter break of the 2008/09 season , the German Bundesliga club and then bottom of the table, Borussia Mönchengladbach , signed him to stabilize his defense and provided him with a four and a half year contract until June 30, 2013. In the Bundesliga he made his debut on March 20, 2009 (25th matchday) in the 0-1 defeat in the home game against VfL Bochum with the substitution for Tobias Levels in the 67th minute. He scored his first Bundesliga goal on April 11, 2009 (27th matchday) in the 1: 2 defeat in the home game against VfL Wolfsburg with the goal of the interim 1: 1 in the 79th minute. On July 6, 2010, he prematurely extended his contract for another year.

During his time in Mönchengladbach, Dante was considered a top performer; he was voted the best defender of the 2009-10 season by fans .

FC Bayern Munich

For the 2012/13 season , Dante moved to Bayern Munich , where he signed a contract that was valid until June 30, 2016. He scored his first goal for FC Bayern Munich on November 24, 2012 (13th matchday) in a 5-0 win at home against Hannover 96 with the goal to make it 4-0 in the 63rd minute. On matchday 28, Dante secured his first German championship with FC Bayern. In the 2-1 victory of Munich in the 2013 UEFA Champions League final , he caused a penalty , which Borussia Dortmund equalized to 1-1. Dante missed the final of the DFB Cup against VfB Stuttgart on June 1, 2013 because of a secondment for the Brazilian national team . Nevertheless, he won the triple after his first season with Bayern . In March 2014 he extended his contract until 2017. In 2014 he won the double with FC Bayern , and in 2015 the German championship again .

VfL Wolfsburg

Shortly before the end of the transfer period on August 31, 2015, FC Bayern Munich and VfL Wolfsburg agreed on an immediate change from Dante, after he had previously asked for his release in order to be able to play more often again. He received a contract with VfL Wolfsburg that was valid until June 30, 2018. He made his points debut for VfL Wolfsburg on September 12, 2015 (4th match day) in a goalless draw in the away game against Bundesliga newcomer FC Ingolstadt 04 ; He scored his only Bundesliga goal for VfL Wolfsburg on January 24, 2016 (18th match day) in the 3-2 defeat in the away game against Eintracht Frankfurt with the goal to make it 1-0 in the 25th minute.

OGC Nice

For the 2016/17 season , the French first division club OGC Nice signed him . In the fourth of the preseason he was a regular in central defense, although he failed with the team in the group stage of the Europa League and they were eliminated early in the two national cup competitions, but in the league Dante finished after his first season in Nice with the Lucien Favre trained team in third place behind Monaco and Paris . OGC Nice was last placed so well in the league in 1976, when they became runner-up behind St. Etienne . With third place, Nice now had the chance to qualify for the Champions League , but could at least knock out Ajax Amsterdam in qualifying , but SSC Napoli then turned out to be too strong and so the Italians moved into the Champions League group stage. For Nice and thus also for Dante, who was now team captain, the Europa League continued, in which Lok Moscow was the final destination after successfully completing the group phase . Dante did not miss a minute of this European tour, which with a total of twelve international games had been the most extensive in OGC history. The league season 2017/18 ended Dante with the Olympique Gymnaste Club de Nice Côte d'Azur in eighth place in the table, so that failed to re-qualify for an international competition. Coach Lucien Favre migrated to Dortmund , his successor was world and European champion Patrick Vieira, a heavyweight of French football, albeit with very little coaching experience. The new coach put on Dante as captain and center-back whose defensive in the course of the season with 35 goals conceded suffered so few results had to like the superior champion Paris Saint-Germain . However, the OGC offensive only managed 30 of its own goals throughout the season, only the two relegated teams from Caen and Guingamp met the opposing team even less often. This resulted in seventh place in the final table and since Nice was eliminated early in the two national cup competitions, as in previous years, Dante and his colleagues were again only the spectator role in the European Cup competitions. In September 2019, Dante fell out for several weeks due to knee problems, but otherwise the 36-year-old is still part of the regular formation. His contract in Nice runs until summer 2021.

National team

On January 22, 2013 Dante was nominated for the first time by national coach Luiz Felipe Scolari for the Seleção . He made his debut on February 6, 2013 in the starting line-up in a 2-1 defeat in the test international at London's Wembley Stadium against England's selection .

At the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil, Dante was part of the Brazilian squad for the first time in a major tournament. In his hometown of Salvador da Bahia , he scored his first international goal on June 22, 2013 in the third group game , the 4-2 win over Italy , 13 minutes after coming on for David Luiz with the opening goal to make it 1-0 . He was also used in the semifinals against Uruguay and won his first title with the national team after beating world and European champions Spain 3-0 in the final .

On May 8, 2014, the Brazilian national coach Luiz Felipe Scolari appointed him to the squad of the Brazilian national team for the 2014 World Cup . Dante's only appearance at the World Cup in his own country was when Brazil lost 7-1 in the semi-final to Germany on July 8, 2014, when he started for the yellow-banned team captain Thiago Silva .

His Afro look became cult in Mönchengladbach . Numerous fans regularly came to Borussia Park with “Dante hairstyles” or “wigs” . After Borussia had secured relegation on May 25, 2011 in the second relegation game of the 2010/11 season against VfL Bochum , Dante had his head shaved according to a promise made earlier.

As an ambassador, Dante supports the Respekt! No place for racism . He has also been the international ambassador for the interdenominational aid organization SOS Children's Villages worldwide since 2013 .

Immediately after FC Bayern Munich's triple triumph in 2013, with victory in the DFB Cup final, which Dante had to stay away from because of being sent to the Seleção, he sent a video message in which he congratulated and sang. The singing was mixed by the Berlin music label Mesanic Music , formerly known as Montana Music Recordings, for the title Wir haben diemeisterschaft and also by the music label Motor Entertainment for the title … and cup and released as a commercial download. Dante donates the proceeds of this campaign to the SOS Children's Villages and the German flood victims . The two single titles reached number 88 and 79 in the German charts .
