He completed 269 Bundesliga games and remained clean in 69 of these games. Career

societies

youth

René Adler began playing soccer at VfB Leipzig in October 1991 at the age of six after he was discovered by the club's junior boss in physical education at the Meusdorf Heinrich Mann School . In 2000 he moved to the youth team at Bayer 04 Leverkusen and from 2002 was a member of the regional league team. When he came to Leverkusen at the age of 15, he initially lived for four years with goalkeeping coach Rüdiger Vollborn and his family.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

For the 2003/04 season , Adler was promoted to the Bundesliga squad, but played exclusively in the second team for the first four years of his career in the men's division. In early May 2006 he suffered a hairline crack in his rib during training, which was reinforced by a titanium plate in an operation and forced Adler to be excluded from the game until February 2007. Shortly after his recovery, he made his Bundesliga debut: Due to a suspension following a red card from Hans Jörg Butt , he was in the starting line-up on February 25, 2007 against FC Schalke 04 , although Benedikt Fernandez Butts was actually the representative. He then ousted Butt as regular goalkeeper for the rest of the season. On March 8, 2007, Adler also made his international debut for the club in the UEFA Cup match at RC Lens .

In the following years, Adler was number one in the Leverkusen goal. He was a 2008 UEFA candidate for Team of the Year. He made it to the DFB Cup final with Bayer in 2009 and was runner-up in 2011 . When he after the 2010/11 season a Patellasehnenoperation underwent, he lost in the following season his place on during the eight-month recovery period Bernd Leno . Before that time, Bayer wanted to extend the contract with Adler, but Adler refused. Adler left Leverkusen at the end of the 2011/12 season.

Hamburger SV

For the 2012/13 season , Adler moved to league rivals Hamburger SV on a free transfer . He signed a five-year contract. The transfer was considered controversial because of the poor economic situation of HSV. The Supervisory Board had previously hesitated for a long time before approving the transfer. In addition, the club was well occupied in the goalkeeping position: Jaroslav Drobný had played a strong Bundesliga second half in 2011/12. Sports director Frank Arnesen took the opportunity to get a German national goalkeeper free of charge. Adler had not played an international match since November 17, 2010 (against Sweden ).

In his first season for HSV he was used in 32 point games. Over long stretches of the season he showed strong performances and got back into the circle of the national team. At the end of the season they just missed the Europa League with seventh place in the table . In his second season he was used 30 times, and in the end, winning the relegation only narrowly escaped relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga . During the season he conceded 63 goals and made the most goalkeeping mistakes in the Bundesliga that led to a goal.

In the 2014/15 season , Adler initially played two games that were lost. Then coach Mirko Slomka Drobný put on for him. Even after Slomka was released, Adler remained the second goalkeeper under Josef Zinnbauer . In October 2014, he suffered a capsular injury in his left knee and was absent for weeks. On matchday 25, Adler returned to the HSV goal after an emergency brake from Drobný and performed well. When Zinnbauer was dismissed a game on, his successor Peter Knäbel appointed him again as the goalkeeper. At the end of the season the league was again successful.

For the 2015/16 season , Adler was elected as deputy to the new team captain Johan Djourou . After playing the first two Bundesliga games from the start, he injured his shoulder in the first half of the third game at 1. FC Köln and had to be replaced by Andreas Hirzel . From the ninth matchday he was back in goal and played - with the exception of the 15th matchday - until the winter break.

After the 2016/17 season , Adler let his contract expire and left the club.

1. FSV Mainz 05

For the 2017/18 season , Adler moved to 1. FSV Mainz 05 , where he received a contract with a term until June 30, 2019. Adler was used as a regular goalkeeper on the first nine match days. At the end of October 2017, he sustained a hamstring muscle tendon injury during the DFB Cup match against Holstein Kiel . He made his comeback at the next cup game against Eintracht Frankfurt in early February 2018. After sitting behind Florian Müller on the bench for a short time , he returned to Mainz goal on matchday 28 and played five more league games. In his last game against RB Leipzig on April 29, 2018, Adler suffered cartilage damage in his knee, which is why he was out for the entire 2018/19 season . Because of this injury, he ended his career at the end of the season with the end of his contract. Adler played 14 Bundesliga and 3 cup games for 1. FSV Mainz 05.

National team

In 2001, Adler was the regular goalkeeper at the U-16 European Championship in England and in 2002 at the U-17 European Championship in Denmark. In 2004 he took part in the U-19 European Championship in Switzerland under coach Dieter Eilts . In 2005 he failed with the German U-20 national team in the quarter-finals of the Junior World Cup against Brazil. The team was looked after by the later Leverkusen trainer Michael Skibbe . In both tournaments, Adler was number one in goal and also captain of the team. He was then from autumn 2005 U-21 national player and in this role also nominated for the junior European Championship 2006 , but renounced his participation due to an injury.

Adler was appointed to the squad for the EM 2008 alongside Jens Lehmann and Robert Enke , displacing Timo Hildebrand . On October 11, 2008 he made his debut in the national team in the qualifying game for the 2010 World Cup against the selection of Russia (2-1). Adler was considered to be a great German goalkeeper and was chosen as the goalkeeper for the World Cup in South Africa in March 2010 . His representatives at the time were Manuel Neuer and Tim Wiese . On May 4, 2010 he had to cancel participation in the tournament after a rib injury, whereupon Hans Jörg Butt , a former teammate from Leverkusen times, moved up as the third goalkeeper in the squad. The regular goalkeeper during the World Cup was Neuer.

In the following period until June 2011 Adler was in the squad in a few games - for example the 1-1 draw in Dortmund against Italy - but was then no longer nominated, on the one hand because of his injury before the start of the 2011/12 season, on the other hand the loss of the regular place in the club. Therefore, he was not appointed to the German team for the 2012 European Championship . After drawing attention to himself at Hamburger SV , he was nominated again on November 9, 2012 for the DFB selection for the friendly match in Amsterdam against the national team of the Netherlands . On February 6, 2013, Adler made his comeback in a 2-1 win at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis against France , where he was also in the starting eleven. He was then nominated for all further international matches in 2013 and used again against Ecuador . On November 19, 2013 he was last in the squad in the 1-0 win at Wembley Stadium in London against England .

After Adler had not been a regular at Hamburger SV for a while and Roman Weidenfeller, another experienced goalkeeper had made his debut as number two behind Neuer on November 19, 2013, he no longer played a role in the plans of national goalkeeping coach Andreas Köpke . He was not considered for the German squad for the 2014 World Cup .

Since 2017 Adler has been involved in a company that manufactures and sells goalkeeper gloves and participates in a goalkeeper academy.
