Rüdiger Vollborn (born February 12, 1963 in West Berlin ) is a former German soccer player . He is Bayer 04 Leverkusen's record player with 472 competitive games, 401 of them in the Bundesliga .
Career
In addition to winning the U-18 European Championship in Düsseldorf, he was also a junior world champion in Australia in 1981 with the German U-20 national team .
Vollborn played 401 goals for Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the Bundesliga between 1983 and 1999 . He won the 1988 UEFA Cup with Leverkusen ( 3-0 and 3-0 aet, 3-2 on penalties against Espanyol Barcelona ). Vollborn offered an outstanding performance and had a large share in the title win. In 1993 Vollborn also won the 1993 DFB Cup with Bayer Leverkusen . To this day, he is Bayer Leverkusen's record player and the only player to win two titles with the Werkself .
Others
When the former Bayer 04 goalkeeper René Adler moved to Leverkusen in 2000, Vollborn took the 15-year-old into his home for four years.
After the end of his active career, he worked as a goalkeeping coach for Bayer 04 for twelve years - initially in the youth division, from 2003 onwards he replaced Toni Schumacher as goalkeeping coach for the first team. After the 2011/12 season, he was replaced as goalkeeping coach by David Thiel and has since worked as a full-time fan manager for Bayer 04.
His son Fabrice is also a goalkeeper, he played a. a. in the regional league team of Bayer 04. He was most recently active for SV Elversberg in Saarland .
In 2004, on the 100th anniversary of the club, Vollborn was elected to Bayer Leverkusen's team of the century. Since March 2018 he has been an expert and co-commentator on the Werkself Radio and the Werkself Podcast. Vollborn also manages the Bayer 04 archive.
