Timo Hildebrand (born April 5, 1979 in Worms ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper . He became German champion with VfB Stuttgart in 2007 and was also active for the German national team at that time . Most recently he was under contract with Eintracht Frankfurt .

Career

youth

Hildebrand was born in Worms, Rhineland-Palatinate , and grew up in Hofheim im Ried, Hesse . He started playing football at the local FV Hofheim / Ried. At the age of 15 he received the first offers from professional football clubs, including those from Cologne , Darmstadt and Mannheim .

VfB Stuttgart

He opted for VfB Stuttgart and belonged to the club between 1994 and 2007, where he was initially used in the men's division in the reserve and from 1999/00 also the Swabian Bundesliga team . With Stuttgart he was runner- up in the 2002/03 season and thus achieved direct qualification for the Champions League . Over the two seasons 2002/03 and 2003/04 Hildebrand stayed 884 Bundesliga minutes without conceding a goal, breaking Oliver Kahn's Bundesliga record . Hildebrand's mark has not been surpassed since then.

On December 19, 2006, VfB Stuttgart withdrew an offer to extend Hildebrand's contract, which expired in June 2007, after Hildebrand was not prepared to make a decision at that time. In this last season at VfB Hildebrand won the German championship as vice-captain in the 2006/07 season and was in the final of the DFB Cup.

Valencia CF

On July 4, 2007 he was finally presented as a new player at Valencia CF. In Spain, Valencia coach Quique Sánchez Flores chose Santiago Cañizares as goalkeeper at the beginning of the 2007/08 season . In the first qualifying first leg for the Champions League, Hildebrand was therefore on the bench, which was considered a preliminary decision in the Valencia environment. In September, however, he was used in the league game at Betis Sevilla and has since been in most league games under Quique Sánchez Flores in goal. When Ronald Koeman took over the post from Flores on October 31, 2007, he relied on Cañizares as a regular goalkeeper, who was also in the box when Hildebrand was unable to play due to a back injury. That changed, however, when Koeman decided due to the sporting failures of Valencia in December 2007 to suspend Cañizares (alongside David Albelda and Miguel Angulo ).

After Hildebrand had established himself as a regular goalkeeper at Valencia, he won the Copa del Rey , the Spanish cup competition, in his first season in Spain . Valencia prevailed in the semifinals after a 1-1 at Camp Nou and a 3-2 at home against FC Barcelona . After the 1-1 draw in the first leg, Hildebrand was unanimously hailed as the man of the game by the Spanish media. In a brilliant save statistic from the Spanish newspaper Marca , Hildebrand broke the Spanish league and cup season record with fourteen brilliant saves in one game. Hildebrand won the cup final with Valencia on April 16, 2008 against Getafe FC 3-1.

Valencia coach Ronald Koeman was sacked five days after winning the Cup; the new coach Voro put Hildebrand's competitor Cañizares back on, but declared that Hildebrand would remain a regular goalkeeper.

For the 2008/09 season, Unai Emery was again committed to a new coach for Valencia. In addition, Renan Brito , Brazilian football goalkeeper, was brought to Valencia CF to compete with Hildebrand. Since he was still with the Brazilian national team at the Olympics at the beginning of the season , Hildebrand was not exposed to the new rival right from the start and was in goal at both finals of the Spanish Supercup . However, after Renan's arrival in Valencia, he was relegated to the stands as number three and had to attend his team's games as a spectator.

On November 28, 2008, Hildebrand finally received the clearance from his club in order to be able to change to a new club free of charge during the transition period in January 2009. On December 4, 2008, both sides agreed to terminate the contract.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim

In the winter break of the 2008/09 season , Hildebrand moved to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , who were leaders at the time, after he had kept fit at VfB in the meantime . He should complement the two previous goalkeepers Ramazan Özcan and Daniel Haas in the second half of the season . He also had an offer from Borussia Dortmund and in hindsight he rated his move to the province as “perhaps the most unfortunate decision I have made. But I wanted to go back to my home. "

At TSG Hoffenheim, Hildebrand met his ex-trainer Ralf Rangnick , who once brought him to the professional team at VfB Stuttgart. Hildebrand played his first competitive game in the Hoffenheim jersey against Energie Cottbus on January 31, 2009. After having to take breaks due to injuries at the beginning, he performed well and made ten league games. Hoffenheim dropped to seventh place after the injury-related failure of striker Vedad Ibisevic - who scored 18 times in the first half of the season.

The team from Kraichgau finished the following season in 11th place. Hildebrand made 28 league appearances and, unlike Daniel Haas, received no contract extension.

Sporting Lisbon

At the beginning of September 2010 Hildebrand signed a contract with Sporting Lisbon for a period of one year. He made his debut for Sporting in the Portuguese Cup against GD Estoril Praia . In October 2010 he also made two appearances in the Europa League against Belgium's KAA Gent . Otherwise, 31-year-old Hildebrand was overshadowed by 22-year-old aspiring goalkeeper Rui Patrício , who made his national team debut in November 2010. Hildebrand was not used in league games and did not extend his expiring contract.

FC Schalke 04

From September 21, 2011 Hildebrand trained at Eintracht Frankfurt to keep fit. On October 21, 2011 he was signed by Schalke 04 for the current season in order to continue to have three goalkeepers in the squad after Ralf Fährmann was injured . He made his competitive debut in the first team on December 14, 2011 in a 3-0 victory in the Europa League at Maccabi Haifa . He parried a penalty . He made his first Bundesliga appearance for Schalke in February 2012 in a 4-0 home win against VfL Wolfsburg. In May 2012 Hildebrand's contract with FC Schalke 04 was extended by two years until the end of the 2013/14 season. In preparation for the 2012/13 season he was named number one in Schalke Tor and was in goal in the DFB Cup match against 1. FC Saarbrücken , which ended 5-0 for Schalke. However, Hildebrand was injured shortly after the first match day and lost his regular place to Lars Unnerstall . He made his comeback on matchday 15 against Borussia Mönchengladbach after Unnerstall had been noticed in the last few games due to uncertainties. After that, he never missed a game until the end of the season.

Hildebrand was also set as number 1 at the beginning of the 2013/14 season. In the first half of the season he conceded 23 goals in twelve Bundesliga games. On November 6, 2013, he made a mistake in the Champions League group game against Chelsea when he shot at Samuel Eto'o 16 meters from his goal and the ball rolled into the goal to make it 1-0 for Chelsea. This meant the turning point in the game against the Schalke team, which had been playing better up until then. In the end, Schalke lost 3-0 and Hildebrand had to take criticism for weeks.

While an injury was bothering him again, he was represented by former number 1 Ralf Fährmann. Fährmann convinced and ousted Hildebrand for the remaining first round games from the Schalke goal. He shouldn't be used in the second half of the season. Hildebrand's contract was not extended; he left the club at the end of the season.

Eintracht Frankfurt

After Hildebrand had not found a new club at the beginning of the season, he kept fit at Karlsruher SC . On September 25, 2014 Eintracht Frankfurt signed him in response to an injury to regular goalkeeper Kevin Trapp . He signed a contract until June 30, 2015. He made his competitive debut on December 12, 2014 in a 2: 3 defeat against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim to replace the sick Felix Wiedwald . Five days later he played his 300th Bundesliga game in a 4: 4 home game against Hertha BSC . His contract was terminated prematurely on January 29, 2015 as a result of Trapp's recovery.

Hildebrand officially ended his career as a professional footballer in March 2016.

National team

In May 2002, Hildebrand was nominated by Rudi Völler in the run-up to the 2002 World Cup as a "substitute player" for the first time for the German national team in order to gain initial experience during preparation without any prospect of participating in the World Cup. He was on the substitutes' bench in the preparatory game against Kuwait (7-0). Before the last preparatory game against Austria , he left again. He made his national team debut almost two years later when he came on as a substitute for Oliver Kahn on April 28, 2004 in the second half at a score of 0: 4 (final score: 1: 5) in Bucharest against Romania .

Timo Hildebrand took part with the national team at the 2004 European Championship in Portugal and the 2006 World Cup in Germany, but was not used there. At the FIFA Confederations Cup 2005 he was in the game against Argentina (2-2) in goal.

At the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Hildebrand was the only player in the German national team who was not used. In the “small final”, Oliver Kahn was preferred. He played his fifth international match in a 1-1 draw in Nicosia against Cyprus, which was also his first competitive game for the national team. In total, he completed seven full international matches. The last one took place in October 2007 against the Czech Republic . For the EM 2008 , the meanwhile moved to Spain was no longer appointed to the DFB squad. In his place, René Adler and Robert Enke were nominated as substitute goalkeepers.
