David Albelda Aliqués (born September 1, 1977 in Pobla Llarga ) is a former Spanish football player . Albelda mainly plays in defensive midfield and was under contract with Valencia CF from 1996 to 2013 .
Career
societies
He made his debut at Valencia CF on March 15, 1998. In 2000 and 2001 he made a significant contribution to reaching the two Champions League finals. After Gaizka Mendieta left the club before the 2001/02 season, Albelda became Valencia's new captain. With his club he won the Spanish championship in 2002 and 2004 . In 2004 he won the UEFA Cup and the European Supercup .
But despite his great sporting success and his role as captain, Albelda, like his teammates Santiago Cañizares and Miguel Ángel Angulo , was removed from the squad by the new coach of Valencia CF , the Dutchman Ronald Koeman , because it did not fit into his playing system. Ironically, Albelda had recently extended his contract to 2011. Since Albelda has played more than four games for Valencia this season, he has not been able to move to another Spanish club. Albelda then went to court with an ultimately unsuccessful lawsuit, which should force Valencia to terminate Albelda's contract and compensate him with his fixed transfer fee of 60 million euros. Since Koeman failed with his system in Valencia, Albelda was called back to the squad by the new coach Voro in late April 2008 . Under the new coach Unai Emery , he was again part of the regular staff most of the time in the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons .
National team
David Albelda has played for the Spanish national soccer team since his debut in the 2-0 away win against Liechtenstein on September 5, 2001 . With Spain he took part in three major tournaments, the 2002 World Cup , the 2004 European Championship and the 2006 World Cup. At the EM 2008 he was not considered by Luis Aragonés . He also won a silver medal with the Spanish national soccer team at the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 .
