The lane change assistant (also: lane change support or blind spot assistant ) is a driver assistance system to warn the driver of impending collisions when changing lanes.

functionality

Vehicles approaching in the neighboring lane are detected by means of ultrasonic sensors , radar sensors (24 GHz or 77 GHz), cameras or laser scanners . The modern sensors are able to register motorcyclists who are otherwise easily overlooked. Warning messages to the driver are issued in different ways, depending on whether the direction indicator ("blinker") has been activated or not.

Depending on the sensors used, the detection range for vehicles approaching from behind differs from approx. 3 m (ultrasound) to sometimes over 70 m (e.g. radar). Close-range sensors are only suitable for detecting vehicles in the blind spot. More extensive sensors are required for active lane change assistants.

In the event that no indicator is activated, a visual warning is issued at best. However, if the indicator is active, a higher warning level is activated, at which the warning is more urgent, usually optically by means of rapidly flashing light displays, usually in the area of the exterior mirrors , acoustically by means of warning tones or haptically by vibrating the steering wheel, the driver's seat or the indicator lever.

Active assistant

Active assistance functions are understood to mean when the lane change assistant not only warns the driver, but also actively intervenes in the steering. These variants are known as active lane keeping assist , side assist or lane change support or auto-steer . The system has to decide in which two adjacent lanes it actively supports the steering: back to the original lane or switch to the other lane. The driver can override the system at the steering wheel.

A function called overtaking assistant refers to the vehicle's independent change of lane to the adjacent lane after the driver has indicated himself to change lanes. Initially, it is only available and sensible to use on motorways with separate lanes, since oncoming traffic is not to be expected here.

Parking assistant

The last function expansion of the lane change assistant is the parking assistant. This uses the same radar sensors in the rear apron. When reversing out of a parking space, this helps to identify approaching cars. Most systems give an optical and an acoustic warning. Both the VW Golf Sportsvan and the VW Passat B8 even have an autonomous brake intervention that can prevent or at least weaken a collision.
