Gaizka Mendieta Zabala (born March 27, 1974 in Bilbao ) is a former Spanish football player . He was most recently under contract with Middlesbrough FC .

Athletic career

Mendieta began his football career in 1991 in Castellón at the local club CD Castellón and moved to Valencia CF a year later . After he and his team in 2000 and 2001 as a captain in the Champions League was drafted Finals, he became a sought-after players. In 2001 he moved to the Italian club Lazio Rome . But he disappointed in the Italian Serie A and was awarded to FC Barcelona a year later . The following season he was loaned from Middlesbrough FC . He later moved to England on a free transfer and won the League Cup in 2004 . In addition, his team was with him in the 2006 UEFA Cup final, but lost significantly 4-0 against the Spanish first division club Sevilla FC .

He missed only one of 29 penalties in competitive games in his career. After the 2007/08 season, Mendieta ended his active career.

National team

Mendieta was in the Spanish squad for the 1996 Olympic Games , where he and his team were eliminated in the quarter-finals. He played a total of 40 games for the Spanish senior team and scored eight goals. He played at the EM 2000 and the 2002 World Cup .
