Castellón de la Plana ( Spanish name; Valencian Castelló de la Plana , both versions are official) is a city in Spain with 171,728 inhabitants (January 1, 2019), which is located in the autonomous region of Valencia . Castellón is the capital of the province of the same name .

geography

Castellón is about 60 kilometers north of Valencia and 160 kilometers south of Tarragona . Neighboring cities are u. a. Villarreal and Benicasim .

education

To the west of the city, which was founded in 1991 and is by I. Jacob (Aragon) named Jaume I University . In 2018 the university had around 14,000 students.

traffic

The Castellón de la Plana trolleybus has been operating in the city since 2008 and is currently the only trolleybus operator in Spain. The Castellón airport is located 40 km north-east of the city center. It was inaugurated on March 25, 2011, but did not go into operation until the end of 2014 due to a lack of permits. The Valencia airport is located 80 kilometers away. The BP Oil España Heliport is located in the city .

Castellón norms

At a meeting of Valencian writers and linguists in Castellón in 1932 it was decided to use the norms of Catalan orthography codified by Pompeu Fabra and already valid in Catalonia in an adapted form for Valencian as well. Therefore, these orthographic norms are also known as Normes de Castelló ('Norms of Castellón').

Attractions

  • The Santa María Co-cathedral is the main church building in the city. The building has already been destroyed several times. The oldest building was built in the 13th century. Today's co-cathedral was built in the neo-Gothic style. The main Gothic facade of the previous building is still preserved.
  • El Fadrí is the bell tower of the Santa María co-cathedral. It was completed in 1604 in the Valencian Gothic style and is now considered the symbol of the city.
  • The bullring Castellón is located directly at the Park Ribalta city park and was inaugurated in 1887. The arena has a diameter of 49 meters and can accommodate 13,000 people.
  • The post office is one of the most representative buildings in the city and was built in 1932 in Neomudejar and Valencian Art Nouveau .
  • The neoclassical basilica of Our Lady of Lledó contains a famous image of the Virgin of Lledó, the main patron saint of the city.
