Germà Colon
Germà Colon Domènech ( Spanish Germán Colón Domènech ; born November 30, 1928 in Castelló de la Plana ; † March 22, 2020 in Barcelona ) was a Spanish Romanist . His main field was the Catalan lexicology . From 1963 to 1997 he was a professor at the University of Basel .
biography
Colon studied Romance studies at the University of Barcelona with Antoni Maria Badia i Margarit and Martí de Riquer and graduated in 1951. The following year he received his doctorate from the University of Madrid with a dissertation on the dialect of his hometown Castelló.
He then got a scholarship and went to Leuven and Zurich , where he met some of the most respected European Romanists such as Sever Pop . The Swiss philologist Walther von Wartburg suggested him as a lecturer in Spanish at the University of Basel, where he has taught since then. Colon received his habilitation in 1959 and was appointed associate professor in 1963 and full professor of Romance philology in 1967. He was retired in 1997 . He was visiting professor at the University of Strasbourg (1968 to 1972) and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1973–1974).
Colon became a member of the Real Academia de las Buenas Letras of Barcelona and of the Editing Commission for the works of Ramon Llull . He was an adviser to the management of the Els Nostres Clàssics collection and to the editor of the magazine Estudis de Llengua i Literatura Catalanes . He was an honorary advisor to the International Society for Catalan Language and Literature (he was President from 1976 to 1982) and a member of the Institute for Catalan Studies .
He donated his personal library with more than 20,000 books to the Jaume I University in Castelló.
Colon died on March 22, 2020 at the age of 91 as a result of a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
