Institut d'Estudis Catalans
The Institut d'Estudis Catalans ( IEC ; German " Institute for Catalan Studies " ) is an academic-scientific society for the study of all aspects of the Catalan language and culture in the Catalan countries with its seat in Barcelona .
founding
At the first Congress for the Catalan Language in 1906, the creation of such a scientific institution was considered. On June 18, 1907, this plan was implemented by the President of the Province of Barcelona, Enric Prat de la Riba , and the Institut d'Estudis Catalans was founded. Specialists in history , literary studies , archeology , art and legal history were included in this research. Antoni Rubió i Lluch was elected the institute's first president and Josep Pijoan the first secretary. In 1911 the scientific base of the institute was expanded to include the areas of Catalan language , natural sciences , philosophy, ethics and political science . From then on, the original core traded under the name "Secció Històrico-Archeològica de l'Institut d'Estudis Catalans" (Historical-Archaeological Section of the Institute for Catalan Studies). The other two sections were called “Institut de la Llengua Catalana” (“Secció Filològica”, Institute for Catalan Language) and “Institut de Ciències” (“Secció de Ciències”, Institute for Natural Sciences), each with the addition “de l'Institut d'Estudis Catalans ”. This double name of the institute was later given up in favor of the section name given in brackets in order to better represent the unity of the entire institute with all its sections. In 1968 the "Secció Filosofia i Ciènces Socials" (Philosophical and Social Science Section) was re-established as a spin-off of the former field of philosophy, law and economics. The number of scientific members developed from eight in 1907, over 21 in 1911 (7 members per section) to 28 in 1968. The IEC is used as the linguistic standard in all Catalan countries ( Catalonia , Balearic Islands , Valencia , Andorra ) Institution recognized.
Research chronology
Since its inception, the institute has collected representative study materials for the Catalan language and culture and, based on this, created a plan for researching the documented objects. For example, from 1907 onwards, the Romanesque works of art (churches, frescoes, altarpieces) in the Pyrenees were systematically cataloged and researched. In 1913 the lexicographic departments were set up . A year later, based on the work of these lexicographical departments, orthographic and grammatical norms (the latter based on Pompeu Fabra's work Gramática de la lengua catalana ) for the Catalan language were published for the first time. With this project the "linguistic anarchy" in the Catalan countries came to an end. A dictionary and normative grammar for the Catalan language began to be developed. In 1914 the IEC founded the “Biblioteca de Catalunya”, an extraordinarily rich scientific library, which is managed under the patronage of members of the IEC, the province and city of Barcelona and sponsors. In 1915 the “ Cartell de Premis ” competition was launched to promote scientific work.
The IEC offered many services to promote research. It maintained laboratories and seminars on research that were comparable to the best research academies in Europe. The “Servei d'Excavations” (excavation service) supported numerous archaeological excavation projects, the results of which can be admired today in the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia . The "Servei de Conservació de Catalogació de Monuments" (Monument Protection) supported the preservation and restoration of historical buildings. The “Oficines Lexicogràfiques” (Language Office) and the “Oficina de Toponímia i Onomàstica” (Toponomastic and Onomastic Services) offered support in language-oriented research projects.
From 1913 a number of subsidiary organizations such as B. the “Societat de Biologia de Barcelona” (1912) or the “Societat Catalana de Filosofia” (1923) and many others were founded to recruit young scientists. In 1985, together with the Ministry of Culture of the Catalan government, the so-called TERMCAT was founded, an institution that combines the neologisms of the Catalan language in the rapidly developing new technologies, e.g. B. the information and life sciences processed and standardized.
