Sever pop

Sever Pop (born July 27, 1901 in Poiana Ilvei , Bistrița-Năsăud district , † February 17, 1961 in Leuven ) was a Romanian Romance studies and dialectologist who was a university professor in Belgium .

life and work

Pop studied at the University of Cluj with Sextil Puşcariu and graduated in 1925 with a doctorate . From 1925 to 1927 he studied linguistic geography in Paris , returned to Romania and made dialectological surveys with a questionnaire of 2160 questions for the Romanian Language Atlas from 1930 to 1937 in 300 locations. From 1931 he was lecturer for dialectology in Cluj, from 1939 professor for the Romanian language and its dialects in Chernivtsi, and from 1940 also in Bucharest . From 1941 to 1946 he was deputy director of the Accademia di Romania in Rome . After their closure he was first visiting professor (1948–1953), then associate professor at the Catholic University of Leuven . There he founded the International Center for General Dialectology and the Orbis magazine in 1952, which he directed from 1952 until his death. In 1960 he organized the first International Congress on General Dialectology.

Pop was a corresponding member of several European academies.
