The Basilica of Our Lady of Lledó ( Valencian : Basílica de la Mare de Déu del Lledó , Spanish Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Lledó ) is in the Spanish Mediterranean city of Castellón de la Plana . The minor basilica is one of the most important sanctuaries in the rural areas of the Valencian Community due to an image of the Virgin of Lledó.

location

The basilica is located northeast of the city center. In the immediate vicinity of the basilica there are mainly plantations and individual smaller houses. The area of ​​the basilica is separated from the main road to the west by a wall. To the west and south, the basilica is surrounded by a square with scattered trees. A building borders the church building directly to the northwest. There is a large car park north of the chapel.

history

According to tradition, in 1366 a peasant found a small image of the Virgin of Lledó, who is now the main saint of Castellón, while plowing. A small chapel was built at the site in the 14th century , which became a place of pilgrimage due to the portrait . The earliest evidence of the chapel's existence dates back to 1374.

In 1572 renovation work was carried out on the church building. The construction of the current church began in 1724 under the direction of the architect Pedro Juan Labiesca and was completed in 1731.

The church was declared a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II on May 1, 1983.

architecture

The church in the style of classicism and the design of a basilica has a rectangular floor plan. It has a central nave and a transept , which together form a Latin cross . The upper aisle of the nave is broken through by rectangular windows. The crossing is a with blue tiles covered cupola crowned. A bell gable towers over the western gable wall . The entrance portal comes from the previous building from 1572.

Furnishing

The basilica houses a small image of the Virgin of Lledó, which was originally located in a monstrance and is now integrated into an image of Mary . It was made from alabaster in the 16th century and is believed to have come from an Italian workshop. Inside there are also metalwork, sculptures, embroidery and some paintings on display.
