Bullring Castellón

The bullring Castellón (Valencian: Plaça de bous de Castelló , Spanish: Plaza de toros de Castellón ) is a bullring in the Spanish Mediterranean city of Castellón de la Plana .

location

The bullring in Castellón is located a few hundred meters northwest of the historic old town, directly at the southern end of the Ribaltas Park . The arena takes up large parts of a block and is bordered to the west, south and east by narrow houses, some of which clearly tower above the arena.

history

The town's previous bullring, made of wood and bricks, had to be demolished in 1878 due to its disrepair. The new arena was designed by the architect and former mayor of the city Manuel Montesinos Arlandis . Construction began in 1885 and was completed on January 12, 1887. The bullring was one of the first buildings to be erected outside the historic city center. However, the inauguration of the arena did not take place until July 3, 1887. In the first fight in the arena, the bullfighters Lagartijo and Frascuelo fought the bull Caramelo .

After Francisco Franco took over the city in June 1938, the site was used as a concentration camp for Republican prisoners for at least three months .

In 2004 the bullring was modernized. Among other things, new and larger seating was built in.

Events of the city festival La Magdalena also take place in the bullring today.
