Pablo Torrijos Navarro (born May 12, 1992 in Castellón de la Plana ) is a Spanish athlete who specializes in the triple jump . In this discipline he is the holder of the national indoor record. In 2015 he became Vice European Indoor Champion.

Athletic career

Pablo Torrijos has competed in athletics since 2009. At that time, in addition to the triple jump, he also started in the long jump. In both disciplines, he qualified for the U18 World Championships in Brixen, Italy. In both disciplines, however, he did not get beyond the qualification and, especially in the triple jump, remained well behind his possibilities. In 2010 he improved in the long jump up to 7.28 m and was also able to improve in the triple jump. In summer 2011 he competed in the triple jump at the U20 European Championships in Tallinn. He managed to jump to 15.71 m in the final, with which he was sixth. In 2012, he jumped 16 meters twice in a competition in his home town of Castellón, improving his best performance to 16.47 m. 2012 was the last year so far in which he was able to improve his performance in the long jump, although he still competes in long jump competitions on a national level.

As a result, he regularly made jumps over 16 meters. In summer 2013 he started at the U23 European Championships in Tampere. He made it into the final, but remained behind his qualification performance with 16.06 m and finished eighth. In 2014 he took part in his first international adult championship at the European Championships in Zurich. He made it into the final straight away. He was able to leave four jumpers behind and finished eighth with 16.56 m. This was the best result of a Spanish three-jumper at a European championship at the time. In spring 2015, Torrijos set a new national record with his victory at the Spanish indoor championships with 17.03 m. Until today, as of 2020, it is the only Spaniard who could jump more than 17 meters in the hall. With his width, he then led the European best list in the run-up to the European Indoor Championships . Two weeks after the indoor record, he then started at the European Championships. After successfully qualifying, he even put a centimeter on top of the best performance in the final and thus won the silver medal. In August he took part in the world championships for the first time in Beijing . At his World Cup premiere, he was eliminated in qualifying and finished in 20th place overall. The preparation for the 2016 Olympic season initially began with smaller indoor distances, but he reached the final at the World Indoor Championships in Portland, which he finished in seventh place. In the summer, his best performance in the open air improved to 16.89 m. Just a week later he started at the European Championships in Amsterdam. As already two years before, he landed in eighth place after reaching the finals. In August he took part in the highlight of the season, the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In the qualification, however, he only came to 16.11 m and was eliminated as eleventh in his qualifying group.

At the end of 2016, Torrijos decided to leave his homeland Castellón and his Italian coach Claudio Veneziano, with whom he still has a good relationship, and instead move to the capital, Madrid, and there under the guidance of Juan Carlos Álvarez ', together with his teammate Train Eusebio Cáceres . In 2017 Torrijos started at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade. There he ended up in ninth place in the final. In the open air he climbed up to 16.96 m over the course of the year and thus also created the standard for the World Championships in London. In his second World Cup participation, this time he made it into the final. He then dropped out after the first three jumps, but left two jumpers behind with 16.60 m. In June 2018, he also managed to jump over 17 meters outdoors for the first time. At the Spanish championships at the end of July he even jumped 17.23 m when he won, which, however, could not be counted due to the strong tailwind. In August he then took part in the European Championships in Berlin , where he again made it into the final. This time he was able to place better with 16.74 m and the associated fifth place than in his first two European Championship participations. In 2019, he didn't come close to his best performances all year round. In March he missed the final at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow. Overall, he finished 15th in Scotland. Due to injuries, he then missed the World Championships in Doha. It increased again in March 2020, shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic reached Europe. At the Spanish indoor championships, he increased his national record to 17.18 m. He took third place on the world's best list. In July he took part in a competition for the first time in Osterode am Harz. Less than a week later, he set a new best in the open air with 17.09 m.

So far, Torrijos has been a total of ten Spanish champions, five times in the open air and five times in the hall. In addition to the national record in the hall for adults, he also set a U23 national record in 2014. His goal is to reach the top 8 at the postponed Summer Olympics 2020 in Tokyo.
