final

August 16, 2016, 9:50 a.m.

Twelve athletes had qualified for the final, five of them beyond the qualification range. the others about their placements. Three Chinese, two US-Americans and one athlete each from France, Guyana, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Poland and Portugal competed for the medals.

The 2012 Olympic champion and reigning world champion Christian Taylor from the USA was the clear favorite for this competition. The US silver medalist from London Will Claye was also in the final and was one of the medal candidates. The Portuguese World Cup third Nelson Évora also started with good prospects . The two-time vice world champion Pedro Pablo Pichardo from Cuba could not compete due to an injury and the German Max Hess, who had just become European champion , was eliminated in the qualification after an injury.

The medal award was decided in the first attempt. Taylor jumped 17.86 m, Claye 17.76 m. In third place was the Chinese Dong Bin with 17.58 m. In this order and the best results achieved by the top three, nothing changed until the end. Taylor subsequently had two more valid attempts, both of which would also have been enough for victory. Dong produced two failed attempts and then did without his remaining three jumps. His compatriot Cao Shuo was able to improve to fourth place in the fifth attempt and was ahead of the Colombian South American champion Jhon Murillo. Nelson Évora from Portugal, the 2008 winner , finished sixth.
