final
August 14, 2016, 10:00 p.m.
Two athletes from the Caribbean island of Grenada qualified for the final. There was also one participant from Bahrain, Botswana, Great Britain, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago and the USA.
The favorites of the race were the South African world champion Wayde van Niekerk and the 2012 Olympic champion Kirani James from Grenada.
James, who started on lane six, led the US athlete LaShawn Merritt on lane five after two hundred meters. At the finish line, James, Merritt and van Niekerk were initially tied. At the start of the home straight van Niekerk had run out of the lead. The South African had the greatest stamina. Merritt was now slightly ahead of James in second place, but the American could no longer keep the pace. Van Niekerk crossed the finish line in 43.03 s and improved Michael Johnson's seventeen-year-old world record by 15 hundredths of a second. Kirani James caught LaShawn Merritt and won silver.
Wayde van Niekerk won the first gold medal in athletics for South Africa in twenty years. At the same time, he was the first Olympic champion over 400 meters to run on the outside lane.
