Alonzo Russell (born February 8, 1992 ) is a Bahamian sprinter who specializes in the 400-meter run .

Athletic career

Alonzo Russell gained his first international experience at the CARIFTA Games 2008 in Basseterre , where he took sixth place + over 400 meters and won the bronze medal with the Bahamian 4 x 400 meter relay. Two years later, he won silver with the relay at the games in George Town and qualified for the Junior World Championships in Moncton , where he was eliminated in the preliminary round. In 2012 he finished fifth in the individual competition at the U23 NACAC championships in Irapuato and won the silver medal in 3: 04.33 min. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , he won the silver medal behind the team from England.

In 2015 he finished fourth in the Bahamian 4 x 400 meter relay at the Pan American Games in Toronto and at the NACAC Championships in San José , he also won silver with the relay and finished seventh in the individual race. He then took part in the World Championships in Beijing and was disqualified there with the relay in the run-up . In 2016 he reached the semifinals over 400 meters at the World Indoor Championships in Portland and won the silver medal behind the United States in the relay in a new national record of 3: 04.75 minutes. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro he was disqualified in the run-up over 400 meters for crossing a lane, but won the bronze medal in the relay in 2: 58.49 min in the final .

In 2017 he took part with the relay at the World Championships in London , but surprisingly dropped out there with 3: 03.04 min in advance . In 2018 he was disqualified in the 400 meter preliminary run at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham . Then he won with the relay again the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast behind the relay from Botswana.

In 2018, Russell became the Bahamian champion in the 400-meter run. He is a student at Florida State University .
