final
August 13, 2017, 9:15 p.m. local time (10:15 p.m. CEST )
In the final there were the following line-up changes:
- Trinidad and Tobago - Jarrin Solomon ran instead of Renny Quow
- USA - Gil Roberts and Fred Kerley replaced Bryshon Nellum and Tony McQuay
- UK - Matthew Hudson-Smith ran for Jack Green
- Cuba - Osmeli Pellicer replaced Darwin Echeverry
The outcome of this final was pretty open. The superiority of the 400-meter runners from the USA that was used in previous years did not exist here in London . With Fred Kerley, only one US athlete had reached the 400 meter individual final and finished seventh there. Botswana and Jamaica had each brought two of their runners into the 400-meter individual final, but had no other top-class representatives over this distance. Both seasons had already been eliminated in the preliminary stages. In addition to the United States, European champion Belgium was to be expected, in whose team the three Borlée brothers ran, as well as the European champion of 2014 Great Britain and Trinidad and Tobago, whose team, like the USA and Great Britain, hit the 3-minute mark in advance had undercut.
Wilbert London III, starting runner in the USA, brought his team to the front with a few meters ahead of the first change. It was very close in the chasing field with Great Britain, Belgium, Trinidad and Tobago, Spain, France and Poland. Even after the second change, the US team stayed a few meters ahead. Behind them Machel Cedenio for Trinidad and Tobago and the Briton Rabah Yousif fought a duel for second place. Belgium, Spain, France and Poland followed more than ten meters behind. On the home stretch of the penultimate lap, Cedenio almost made up for the gap to US runner Michael Cherry, the British were about four meters behind.
On the last lap it was exciting until the end. While Jack Green tried to bring the British closer to the two leaders, Fred Kerley fought for the USA and Lalonde Gordon for Trinidad and Tobago for victory. Green was able to shorten the gap a bit, but in the end had no chance of reaching the top duo. Great Britain won the bronze medal with a large lead over the field of pursuers. In the final sprint, Gordon clearly prevailed against Kerley and secured the world championship title for Trinidad and Tobago. The United States took silver. Belgium finished fourth ahead of the surprisingly strong Spaniards, who came fifth with a new national record. Cuba came in sixth ahead of Poland and France.
