Machel Cedenio (born September 6, 1995 in Point Fortin ) is a sprinter from Trinidad and Tobago who specializes in the 400-meter run .

Athletic career

Machel Cedenio gained his first international experience at the 2010 CARIFTA Games in George Town , where he won the gold medal with the Trinidadian-Tobacco 4 x 400 meter relay. He then took part in the Central American and Caribbean Junior Championships in Santo Domingo , where he won the silver medal in the individual competition over 400 meters and with the relay. In 2011, at the CARIFTA Games in Montego Bay, he won gold medals in the 200 and 400 meters as well as silver in the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meters relay. He then took part in the Youth World Championships in Lille , where he finished fourth over 400 meters and achieved sixth place in the sprint relay (1000 meters) in the final. He then took part in the Pan-American Junior Championships in Miramar , dropped out of the individual competition in the first round and secured the silver medal behind the United States with the relay. At the CARIFTA Games 2012 in Hamilton , he won the silver medal both over 400 meters and with the relay. This was followed by two gold medals at the Central American and Caribbean Junior Championships in San Salvador . At the Junior World Championships in Barcelona he took fifth place in the 400 meter final in 46.17 seconds and won the bronze medal in the relay in 3: 06.32 minutes.

In 2013 he won the individual competition over 400 meters at the CARIFTA Games in Nassau and secured silver with the relay. At the CAC championships in Morelia , he also won with the relay. In 2014 he won two gold medals at the CARIFTA Games in Fort-de-France and previously secured the bronze medal with the relay at the World Relays in the Bahamas . He then won at the CAC Junior Championships in Morelia the title over 400 meters in 45.28 s and the title at the Junior World Championships in Eugene in 45.1 s. With the season he retired there in the preliminary round. In 2015 he finished seventh with the season at the World Relays and qualified during the season for the Pan American Games in Toronto , where he won the silver medal behind Dominican Luguelín Santos in 44.70 s . He also secured the gold medal in front of Cuba with the relay in 2: 59.60 minutes. He then finished seventh in the final over 400 meters in 45.06 seconds at the World Championships in Beijing and won the silver medal behind the United States with the relay in a new national record of 2: 58.20 minutes in the final .

At the 2016 World Indoor Championships in Portland , Cedenio was a member of the 4 x 400 meter relay of Trinidad and Tobago, which won the bronze medal. However, it was only used in advance. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he finished fourth in the 400 meter final with a new national record of 44.01 s. He replaced Ian Morris as the national record holder. With the relay he was disqualified in advance because of a track violation. At the 2017 World Championships in London , he won the title in the 4 x 400 meter relay together with Jarrin Solomon , Jereem Richards and Lalonde Gordon with a national record of 2: 58.12 min in the final . He also competed in the 400-meter run, but retired with 45.91 s in the semifinals .

In 2018 he took part for the first time in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast , where he reached the semi-finals over 400 meters and finished fourth in the Trinidadian-Tobagian 4 x 400 meter relay with 3: 02.85 min.

In 2016 and 2017 Cedenio became the Trinidadian-Tobagian champion in the 400-meter run.
