The men's 4 by 400 meter relay at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place on August 13-14, 1983 in Helsinki , Finland .
21 relay teams with 94 athletes took part in the competition. The gold medal was won by the Soviet Union after 3: 00.79 minutes with the line-up of Sergei Lowatschow , Aljaksandr Trashchyla , Nikolai Chernetsky and Viktor Markin .
Silver went to the Federal Republic of Germany in 3: 01.83 minutes with Erwin Skamrahl (semifinals / final), Jörg Vaihinger , Harald Schmid and Hartmut Weber (preliminary / final) as well as Martin Weppler (preliminary) and Edgar who were also used in the preliminary / semifinals Nakladal (semifinals).
The bronze medal was secured by the United Kingdom with Ainsley Bennett (final), Garry Cook , Todd Bennett and Philip Brown as well as Kriss Akabusi in 3: 03.53 min in the preliminary and semi-finals .
The runners only used in the preliminary / semi-finals received the corresponding precious metal.
